Next-Generation Bentley Mulsanne Could Lose The Combustion Engine

Next-Generation Bentley Mulsanne Could Lose The Combustion Engine Crewe's flagship rumored to go fully electric early into the next decade. Eclipsed by the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the current-generation Bentley Mulsanne has been around since 2010, but that doesn’t mean it’s about to be renewed. In fact, a new report originating from the U.K. indicates the flagship model from Crewe will not be introduced this decade, with the rumor mill pointing towards a launch in the early 2020s. When it will eventually arrive, the luxobarge could eschew its biturbo 6.75-liter V8 gasoline engine altogether to make room for an all-electric setup.

The lack of a working time machine denies us the ability to answer many of the questions that vex us. The latest is to wonder just what Walter Owen Bentley would say if he discovered that, 100 years after he founded his eponymous company, it has released a limited-edition car named after him and containing a slice of a crankshaft formerly fitted to his own 8 Litre sedan.

Having worked on aero engines during the First World War, we suspect W.O. would be somewhat perturbed to discover that Bentley is now in the hands of a German automaker. And, having seemed to be profoundly unsentimental regarding old cars, he doubtless would struggle to understand why a piece of scrap crankshaft is being treated like a medieval relic. But he would likely also feel a good deal of warmth at being remembered so fondly, and if you are going to have a car named after you, then a Mulsanne is about as good as it gets.

Set to be unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August, the Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner celebrates W.O’s last design before he lost control of his company to Rolls-Royce. Just 100 of these special-edition Mulsannes will be produced, a number that corresponds to the production tally of the 1930 Bentley that inspired it. That was the most powerful car on sale in Britain at the time of its launch, thanks to a 220-hp inline-six engine, which gave it the ability to reach speeds of up to 100 mph.

The W.O. Edition is available as either a regular Mulsanne, the stretched long-wheelbase version, or the Mulsanne Speed. It comes with 1930s-appropriate Onyx exterior paintwork (although other colors are available on request) plus a chrome strip along the center of the long hood with a Flying B logo at the front. It also gains the option of a full-chrome grille; the regular Mulsanne has a body-color shell and chrome bars. A badge at the bottom of the fenders incorporates W.O’s signature.

Bentley has begun its centenary celebrations a year early with the reveal of its 100 th anniversary Mulsanne special edition . The car is designed to honour the company' s founder , W . O . Bentley .

Bentley’s design team has been given freer rein inside the cabin, with what’s described as a “color-split interior cut from heritage hide reflecting the patina of vintage cars,” plus that greatest of automotive accomplishments, an opening liquor cabinet located between the rear seats. This includes a marquetry scene made from four different wood types and featuring a stylized image of the grille and headlight of the Bentley , plus a display window to show the slice of the original crankshaft.

Don’t worry, W.O’s one-time ride was not harmed to make this modern spinoff. His 8 Litre was the second one produced, and he only owned it briefly, selling it when he lost control of the company. Bentley bought it back in 2006 and gave it a full restoration that included replacement of the original crankshaft, which then apparently sat in the corporate archive until the company could think of an appropriate use for it. The 8 Litre is still regularly used and has become the ceremonial car for Bentley’s CEO.

We don’t have any pricing details yet, but buyers can expect to pay a sizable supplement for a car wearing the founder’s name-and, of course, that special slice of camshaft.

Thanks to a combination of good brakes and dumb luck, we came to a quick stop while the oblivious transport driver continued on – in our lane.
