The Alpina B6 GT3 Race Car Is an Assault on the Senses

The Alpina B6 GT3 Race Car Is an Assault on the Senses That bright green paint. Those stunning Alpina wheels. That V-8 sound. This car has it all. Alpina is known for its heavily modified BMW street cars, but it builds race cars as well. This E63-generation 6-Series was built to run in GT3 in Europe, equipped with an Alpina V-8 making 530 horsepower. The combination of that green paint job, those signature multi-spoke Alpina wheels, and that lovely exhaust note make for one hell of a wake-up call. Check it out here racing in-period, and please, make sure to turn the volume up.

But Alpina says that new intercoolers, new engine-management software, and BMW 's own improvements to the engine give the updated B 7 a lower torque peak and better throttle response That would make it the fastest sedan you can buy , beating out the 204-mph Dodge Charger Hellcat.

Not everyone will understand the 2020 BMW Alpina B7, and that's probably how owners like it. The eight-cylinder B7 has the same astounding 600 hp as the M760i, but the Alpina boasts something that M-branded 12-cylinder sedan can't match: a cool backstory. Around for more than half a century now, Alpina applies its craftsmanship to BMWs by elevating the cars' overall performance and tweaking the interior. Aside from those gorgeous multi-spoke wheels, most people won't distinguish a B7 as anything more than just another 7 Series. Except the B7 does one thing no 7 Series can: travel at up to 205 mph.

Up 11 mph from the previous model, that top speed alone will likely sell a few B7s. But as we zoom down the autobahn at speeds higher than any U.S.-spec 7 Series can, I'm not thinking about how Alpina will only sell a few hundred B7s a year. I'm concentrating on the heavy steering at that speed, noticing the wind noise (not even six-figure luxury cars can keep out noise at 165 mph), and praying that no slower car veers into my lane. At slower speeds, I reflect on how powerful the all-wheel-drive 2020 Alpina B7 feels even at triple-digit speeds. I can thank the B7's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 for that; the engine is mated to a well-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission. You want more bragging rights? The B7 is now a tenth of a second quicker to 60 mph than the M760i (woo!).

Alpina To Work On BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe

Alpina To Work On BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe It might also tweak a plug-in hybrid BMW, possibly the 745e. Through its vast M Performance catalog, BMW has already presented many ways of how the future owner of an 8 Series Gran Coupe will be able to spice up the stylish large sedan. There’s going to be at least one other way to make the 6 Series Gran Coupe replacement stand out from the crowd as Alpina has confirmed plans for a B6 successor. In an interview with CNET’s Roadshow, Alpina boss Andreas Bovensiepen said customers are going to expect a successor for the 6 Series GC, therefore the Buchloe-based company will work on the new four-door 8er.

For those who don't already know, Alpina is more than a BMW tuning shop. Much like Ruf, the German government considers Alpina its own auto Over the last five and a half decades, Alpina has developed such a close relationship with BMW that the press release announcing the new B 7 was

The B7 aims to be a luxury-first executive car with a bit of sportiness, but never at the expense of comfort. And on the comfort part, the Alpina nails it. Then again, your mileage may vary—the roads near Alpina's factory in Germany were in pristine condition. Sportiness is another question. Yes, the 2020 B7 can keep up with the best of them on a winding road, but you never forget about this sedan's 207.4 inches. Dive under heavy braking and lift at wide-open throttle are part of the dynamic picture—and for me on narrow two-lane roads—a sense that this very capable but big car was out of place. If I can afford a $143,795 B7, I'm taking my sports car on a tiny winding road, not my big four-door.

Regardless of how and where you drive the Alpina B7, take comfort in the car's brakes, also updated for the 2020 model year. They provide linear response and are ready to help if those 600 horses get ahead of you. Driven at sane speeds, the Comfort mode's steering feels too loose and a little dead on center. Good thing there's a Custom mode, where I'd set the steering to Sport but keep the suspension comfortable as I quietly cruise to and from the office.

Alpina CEO Andreas Bovensiepen Talks BMW SUVs, Z4, And Even Supra

Alpina CEO Andreas Bovensiepen Talks BMW SUVs, Z4, And Even Supra We sit down with the man in charge of Alpina. Alpina’s partnership with BMW runs deep – the two companies have been working together since the mid-1960s. Through the alliance, iconic vehicles the Alpina C1, Alpina B5, beloved Alpina B9, and most recently, the 7-Series-based B7 (which we spent some time in) have spawned. But Alpina as a business isn’t nearly as big as its boisterous products might lead you to believe. Nestled between homes and small restaurants in the tiny town of Buchloe, Germany, the Alpina headquarters is an unassuming place.

Freshly updated, the new BMW 7 Series offers two performance flagships. As with the previous, pre-facelifted version, the top tier of BMW 's flagship sedan lineup is shared by two models. So you'd figure the M760i would be faster , right? Only it isn't. Though both utilize all-wheel drive and an

Autoblog Reviews . The new flagship performance sedan from Munich is the 2017 BMW Alpina B 7 xDrive. The BMW ALPINA B 7 xDrive utilizes a new generation of the excellent 8-Speed Sport Automatic Transmission with ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC.

The U.S.-spec Alpina B7 won't be too quiet, though. Production for our B7s begins this month, and we're told that American B7s will be tuned to make a bit more noise than the European model we drove. Cool. That and the plaque on the center console reminds you of your 7 Series' otherness—important unless you plan to fully exploit that 600 hp every day.

BMW's own M760i also makes 600 hp, but the Alpina marks another advantage in the most unlikely place: driving range. The M760i's 50 percent larger engine takes its toll at the pump; you'll have to fill up—or hire someone to fill up—more often in the V-12 BMW than the V-8 Alpina, based on 2019's EPA figures. With the Alpina, it's about convenience and comfort.

Well, and bragging rights. Because if there's one thing I would want if I were a diehard BMW fan, it's sticking it to Mercedes (the S 63's top speed is 186 to the B7's 205 mph). So if you actually like the 2020 7 Series' 40 percent larger, garish grille and don't expect back-road miracles from a nearly 5,000-pound luxury sedan, consider the Alpina B7.

Both gasoline and diesel versions could be in the pipeline. A little over a month ago, Motor1.com sat down and had a chat with Alpina about a variety of topics, one of which was the possibility of an amped-up BMW X7. Just a few short weeks later, our own spies caught on camera a lightly disguised prototype of the performance SUV while undergoing testing at the Nürburgring. The camouflage has now been removed in the digital realm courtesy of a Photoshop project elaborated by our colleagues at Kolesa.ru.
