Off-Roading a Lifted Chevy Caprice: Only On Roadkill

Off-Roading a Lifted Chevy Caprice: Only On Roadkill Can you think of a better ride—a ’99 Chevy Caprice—to a bar in the middle of the desert? Why are inappropriate cars the most fun? You’d think with a lifetime of off-road driving behind him, David Freiburger could come up with a better choice for a desert-bombing vehicle than a lifted Chevy Caprice on 26-inch wheels, but this is Roadkill, and Mike Finnegan has the same sensibilities.

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt sits in the top half of our hybrid and electric car rankings. This roomy, feature-rich car has a capable and efficient electric powertrain, as well as agile handling.  However, it also has some subpar cabin materials.

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt is ranked:

  • #4 in 2017 Hybrid Cars
  • #5 in 2017 Hatchbacks
  • #6 in 2017 Affordable Small Cars
  • #10 in Used Hybrid Cars $20K and up
  • #12 in Used Hatchbacks $15K and up
  • #19 in Used Small Cars $14K and up

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt a Good Used Car?

The 2017 Chevy Bolt is a great choice in the hybrid and electric car class. With this electric vehicle, you don’t have to stop every 50 or 60 miles to recharge. That’s because it’s the first mainstream car to make a significant dent in “range anxiety,” which is the fear of draining the battery before you can find a place to recharge. The Bolt can travel up to 238 miles on a single charge.

What's the Best 2022 Chevrolet Blazer Trim? Here’s Our Guide

What's the Best 2022 Chevrolet Blazer Trim? Here’s Our Guide Although the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer midsize SUV shares nothing with the off-roady Blazers of old, we’ve found the new Chevy crossover can still be an engaging and practical ride. Earning the nickname the “Camaro of SUVs” for its bold but familiar styling, the Blazer RS has performance to match its looks. The RS, however, is just one of many 2022 Blazer trims, and it's available with two engines. So if the Blazer is on your shortlist and you aren't sure which one to get, keep reading for our trim review.

This electric Chevy is also a hub of technology. It comes with an abundance of advanced features, including available driver assistance technology. Both rows are roomy, which is impressive for a car of this size. On the road, the Bolt has peppy acceleration, nimble handling, and a comfortable ride on most surfaces. Unfortunately, the cabin materials aren’t as nice as you might expect for the price.

2021 Chevrolet Corvette Meets Its Harshest Critics

2021 Chevrolet Corvette Meets Its Harshest Critics 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Meets Its Harshest CriticsOver the years, the Corvette (named after a small, manoeuvrable gun boat) evolved from a boulevard cruiser into a legitimate sports car. For a time, the Corvette was the preferred choice of astronauts and road racers – the benchmark upon which to measure a competitor’s success or failure. Carrol Shelby knew his Cobra wouldn’t stand a chance if it couldn’t beat, or at least compete, with the mighty Corvette.

There’s no shortage of new compact cars that cost less than the 2017 Bolt. Most are powered only by gas, but some of the Bolt’s fuel-efficient rivals are still worth considering. The 2018 Honda Civic starts at $18,940, and it earns some of the best fuel economy estimates in the class (32 mpg in the city and 42 on the highway), and can travel 446 miles on a full tank of gas. It also features an upscale cabin, lots of seating and trunk space, and a smooth ride.

2017 Chevrolet Bolt Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2017 Chevrolet Bolt or 2017 Toyota Prius Prime?

The 2017 Toyota Prius Prime and Chevrolet Bolt both rank highly in the used hybrid and electric car class. The Prius Prime is a plug-in hybrid vehicle with a 640-mile range (on gas and electric power). That’s much longer than the Bolt’s 248-mile all-electric range. Moreover, you can quickly refuel the Prius Prime at a gas station, while the Bolt requires a charging station and at least a half-hour wait before you can get back on the road. The Prius Prime also has a roomier interior than the Bolt. However, the Prius Prime’s acceleration is rather mundane, and its infotainment system is slow to respond at times. At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with either car.

Which Is Better: 2017 Chevrolet Bolt or 2017 Chevrolet Volt?

If you like the Bolt but aren’t yet sold on an all-electric vehicle, consider the 2017 Chevy Volt. It’s a plug-in hybrid, so its total range allows for significantly longer non-stop trips than a fully charged Bolt. Both cars offer brisk acceleration, a quiet ride, and lots of features. Despite its shorter range, the Bolt is the better car overall. It’s more fun-to-drive than the Volt, and it has more passenger and cargo space.

2017 Chevrolet Bolt Performance

How Does the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Drive?

The Chevy Bolt is powered by an electric motor that generates 200 horsepower. It has zippy acceleration, with a zero-to-60 time of about 6.5 seconds. Still, some may find the Bolt’s power to be inadequate for highway passing and merging.

With the batteries and other electric components beneath the rear seats and floor, the Bolt has a low center of gravity. This gives it sharper handling than a majority of electric vehicles. Although there isn’t much body lean, the Bolt's low-rolling resistance tires limit its agility on sharper turns. The ride is firm without being uncomfortable. Also, the transitions between the Bolt’s regular and regenerative brakes are smooth, which isn’t true of all hybrid and electric cars.

Does the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Get Good Gas Mileage?

The Bolt returns 128 MPGe in the city and 110 MPGe on the highway (find out more in our article, What Is MPGe?). It has a 238-mile driving range on a full charge, which exceeds the range of many other electric cars. Replenishing a depleted battery takes nine hours using a 240-volt charger. You can get 90 miles of range with a 30-minute charge at a DC fast-charging station.

2017 Chevrolet Bolt Interior

How Many People Does the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Seat?

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt seats five on cloth upholstery. Manually adjustable seats are standard, but power seats are not available. Leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, and a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel are available. Cabin styling and materials are somewhat disappointing, with hard plastic surfaces throughout.

The Bolt's cabin is surprisingly roomy, thanks to an interior design that maximizes space. Even the back seats are quite spacious, offering enough room to accommodate taller adults. Although the Bolt’s seats have little padding, they provide adequate comfort and support for short drives.
