Review: 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Sport

Review: 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Sport On occasion, a single trim level or option package of a certain model becomes so popular that the manufacturer chooses to make it a model all its own. By far, the best example of this graduation comes from within Subaru’s own wheelhouse. Twenty-five years later, the Outback stands on its own as a model separate from the Legacy, having expanded its customer base from bohemian sandal enthusiasts to families looking for a quirky all-wheel drive alternative to the sea of milquetoast crossovers.

Back in 1994, sensing that sport utility vehicles were going to be popular, Subaru wisely took a Legacy wagon, jacked up the suspension, added body cladding and with a few more changes, created the Outback. Over the years, it’s become an alternative to big, clumsy SUVs and helped put Subaru on the North-American map.

Subaru Plugging-In Crosstrek Using Toyota Hybrid Tech

Subaru Plugging-In Crosstrek Using Toyota Hybrid Tech Subaru has just announced that it will be making a plug-in version of the Crosstrek compact crossover. It's the automaker's first plug-in, but not its first hybrid. Subaru's first hybrid in North America was the XV Crosstrek hybrid that arrived for the 2014 model year in Canada. That car used Subaru's own hybrid system that used a small 13-hp electric motor and a 0.6 kWh battery pack. The fuel economy increase was slim, and the model was dropped after 2016. The new Crosstrek Hybrid goes straight to the king of hybrids. Under the hood is the Toyota Hybrid System. That's thanks to a partnership between the two automakers that has Toyota owning a substantial piece of Subaru. So the new Crosstrek Hybrid will share plug-in hardware with the Toyota Prius Prime. Subaru hasn't given out the specs for the power and range of this new hybrid, but the Prius Prime uses an 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and uses two electric motors that make 91 hp and give that car a 40 km electric range. This Subaru won't have a Prius engine, though. Subaru said that the Crosstrek Hybrid will stay true to its roots and use a Subaru flat-four engine. Subaru's latest platform, which underpins the Impreza and Crosstrek, was designed to accommodate hybrid and electric powertrains as well as gas-only. Subaru hasn't released photos but did say that the Hybrid would get some styling changes to reflect the new powertrain.

The Japanese automaker tried its luck again with the Outback Sport, based on the compact Impreza, with modest results. But then, Subaru retaliated with the XV Crosstrek—renamed the Crosstrek for 2016—and sales picked up. Both the Outback and the Crosstrek outsell their Legacy and Impreza counterparts by a considerable margin, and as car sales in general are sagging in favour of SUVs and crossover vehicles, Subaru’s product planners now look like visionaries.

The Crosstrek has been thoroughly redesigned for the 2018 model year and as before, it squeezes itself in the subcompact SUV segment by its size, powertrain and price. However, unlike its rivals that are based on subcompact cars, the Subaru has the advantage of offering a compact-sized cockpit. It’s particularly noticeable for rear-seat occupants, who benefit from more leg, shoulder and hip room than the majority of its rivals.

Subaru Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid Coming for 2019 with Toyota Tech

Subaru Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid Coming for 2019 with Toyota Tech A number of green-car buyers were disappointed when Subaru chose not to offer a hybrid version with the launch of its second-generation Crosstrek last year. While the original Crosstrek Hybrid wasn’t very good and failed to meet expectations, there was hope that a model redesign and upgraded system would come …Now, however, with the Crosstrek fulfilling its great potential and enjoying tremendous sales success (it leads all Subaru vehicles in Canada and ranks third in the U.S.), the Japanese automaker is confident that the time is right for an encore.

I've owned seven Subarus over my years of driving. That might sound like a lot, but I used to go through cars fast. If you look at the success of the outgoing model, the 2018 Crosstrek has a good chance of delivering on its promises.

As for cargo space, the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek is rated at 588 litres with the rear seats in place, down a little compared to the previous-generation model. However, by folding down the seatbacks, maximum space expands to 1565 litres, beaten only by the Honda HR-V and the Nissan Qashqai.

Our loaded Crosstrek Limited’s cockpit was dressed up in an interesting two-tone, white and gray leather upholstery with orange contrast stitching—the latter also spruces up the dashboard and door panels. The overall design isn’t too risky, fit and finish is quite good, and finally, the upper dash information display is more modern and colourful.

Subaru’s infotainment system isn’t the slickest on the market, but its recent redesign has brought it up to speed with many features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen is reactive to finger poking, although its glossy finish washes out in direct sunlight.

Valet Wedges Porsche 911 Under Subaru, Creates Tower Of Boxer Engines

Valet Wedges Porsche 911 Under Subaru, Creates Tower Of Boxer Engines Some poor, poor valet in Sydney, Australia somehow managed to stuff a client’s Porsche 911 Carrera under the end of a parked Subaru Crosstrek, creating a lovely mound of boxer-engine goodness. This happened outside of the Hyatt Regency Sydney, and actually resulted in the valet getting stuck inside the Porsche, The Sydney Morning Heraldreports. The news site quotes the hotel’s director of sales and marketing, Matthew Talbot, who described the extraction process, saying: “Luckily the car underneath had a soft top, so [emergency services] were able to cut open that soft canopy and [they] got our diver out of there.

Every 2018 Subaru Crosstrek features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that develops 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque, connected to either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic. Output is about average for the vehicle segment, and the Subaru is one of the rare models that can had with a manual gearbox pretty much throughout its trim level lineup. The Crosstrek also benefits from six gears, while the Impreza also offers a five-speed unit, which is something to consider for those who prefer to row through their own cogs.

It’s not a slouch, but the Subaru isn’t a rocket, either. It’ll merge in highway traffic just fine, and while the automatic transmission doesn’t make the car any more fun to drive, it helps achieve low fuel consumption numbers. During our winter test, we averaged 8.8 L/100 km, which isn’t bad at all given its all-wheel drivetrain and road conditions. Subaru even gave its Crosstrek a 680-kg (1500-lb.) tow rating.

Speaking of AWD, the Crosstrek boasts one of the most competent setups to confront our harsh Canadian snow season. The full-time system clamps down its four wheels and bites into slippery surfaces with poise. In summertime, though, the Crosstrek loses a big part of its superiority over the competition, but at least Subaru figured out how to keep fuel economy high. As a matter of fact, this model is one of the most efficient subcompact crossovers sold in Canada.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Pricing Announced

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Pricing Announced Subaru has just priced the Crosstrek for 2019. The crossover was all-new last year, so the new year brings small changes. Some updated software for the infotainment system and some slight price changes. The Crosstrek comes standard with a 2.0L boxer-four engine that makes 152 hp. Uniquely for the segment, and for crossovers in general, it continues to be offered with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. And not just the base model, either. The manual comes on the Convenience, Touring, and Sport trims. Optional on those trims, and standard on Limited, is Subaru's Lineartronic CVT, the full line has standard all-wheel drive. The Crosstrek's standard 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It gets a software update that Subaru says makes operation smoother and more fluid. There is a new shade of paint this year, dark blue pearl, available on Touring, Sport, and Limited. Base pricing for the Crosstrek remains the same, starting from $23,695. Other trims get a slight bump, up $100 from last year. The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek goes on sale this month.

2018 Subaru Crosstrek first drive review. Subaru 's new Crosstrek crunches gravel with the best of them. The all-new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek is a dramatic improvement over the outgoing model. If you like the Crosstrek , you’ll love this new model.

The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek is appealing for a number of readily apparent reasons, ranging from its handsome and rugged looks to its competitive pricing and ample cargo and passenger room.

It can also hit the trails without too much worry, thanks to its ground clearance—one of the highest in its class—and the X-Mode system, which helps control wheelspin over rough or risky surfaces. Obviously, very few SUV owners actually go off-roading, but it’s good to know that the Crossktrek can handle it. It’s no surprise that we see so many of these vehicles with bicycle racks and kayaks on their roofs, because it’s a good companion for those who enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle.

Pricing starts at $23,695 before freight and delivery charges, while a nicely equipped Crosstrek Sport with an automatic transmission and Subaru’s excellent EyeSight advanced safety suite retails for just over $30K. For that price, we get heated front seats, a power sunroof and blind spot monitoring, but sadly, a heated steering wheel is only available on the Limited trim levels—the most expensive ones.

There are many models to choose from in the subcompact SUV category, and many good ones, too. If surviving winter and a car-like ride are high on our list of wants and needs, the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek will serve us well. Its drive could use a little more refinement and its cabin could be better insulated from road noise, but overall, it’s a significant improvement over the previous-generation Crosstrek.

What’s new with the 2018 Subaru Legacy and Outback .
Subaru’s mid-size models get minor updates; major overhauls not neededThe updates are similar for both models, though the comparatively low Canadian sales for Legacy (which sold 3,001 units in 2016) means the number of available trim levels has been cut way back for 2018 models, from 12 options to six.
