Health Germany orders antibody agents

In the fight against Corona, the federal government has bought drugs to treat infected risk patients. It costs 400 million euros.

The former US President Donald Trump once praised the use of so-called monoclonal antibodies in the fight against Corona in the highest tones. Now Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn also ordered two of the funds. The monoclonal antibodies would be used in Germany as the first country in the EU - initially in university clinics, the minister announced. According to Spahn, the federal government has secured a total of "200,000 cans for 400 million euros".

According to a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health, these are "Bamlavinimab" antibodies from the US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and a preparation from the American company Regeneron with the antibodies "Casirivimab" and "Imdevimab". Trump was also treated with the Regeneron cocktail in October last year after his corona infection.

Both drugs have received emergency approval in the United States. In the European Union, however, approval is still pending.

The antibodies are intended to prevent the coronavirus from multiplying in human cells. According to studies, the treatment could help limit the amount of virus in the body and have a positive impact on the course of the disease.

According to an assessment by the responsible Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI), application is generally permissible in Germany after an individual risk-benefit assessment. The preparations will gradually be made available to the specialized hospitals free of charge in the coming weeks.
