The Middle Eastern country's national carrier confirmed it would suspend all flights to and from Canada as of August 13. At the moment, Saudia operates two routes out of Toronto's Pearson International Airport to the capital city of Riyadh and another to Jeddah.

The airline said it would cover cancellation fees, issue refunds and find alternative flights for affected travelers.

WestJet ending Montreal to Quebec service

Meanwhile, the Saudi Foreign Ministry stated that it believes Canada's position is based on "misleading information."

"The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed disbelief by this negative unfounded comment, which was not based in any accurate or true information," said the statement. "It is quite unfortunate to see the phrase 'immediate release' in the Canadian statement, which is a reprehensible and unacceptable use of language between sovereign states."

In addition to flights, the Saudi government is weighing canceling thousands of scholarships for students studying in Canada.
