An Oshawa man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his mother after her apartment went up in flames Sunday night.

Durham Regional Police were called to an apartment building on Nonquon Road, near Taunton Road East and Ritson Road North, shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday.

An 83-year-old woman was found inside the apartment. She was taken to hospital, where she later died.

While the cause of the blaze was not immediately known, Durham police Const. George Tudos said there was evidence at the scene that suggested it was "suspicious in nature."
