Robert Leeming has been formally charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Calgary mother Jasmine Lovett, 25, and her toddler Aliyah Sanderson. Leeming, 35, who was brought to the arrest processing unit just after 11 p.m. Monday night, made a brief CCTV appearance before a justice of the peace Tuesday morning. An Oshawa man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his mother after her apartment went up in flames Sunday night.
Durham Regional Police were called to an apartment building on Nonquon Road, near Taunton Road East and Ritson Road North, shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday.
An 83-year-old woman was found inside the apartment. She was taken to hospital, where she later died.
While the cause of the blaze was not immediately known, Durham police Const. George Tudos said there was evidence at the scene that suggested it was "suspicious in nature."
Homicide detectives took over the investigation.
On Tuesday morning, Durham police identified the victim was Yvonne Mooney of Oshawa. Her 56-year-old son, who lived with Mooney at the Nonquon Road apartment, is charged with second-degree murder.

A 50-year-old Toronto man has been charged with second-degree murder after another man was found dead at a west-end home Tuesday night. Emergency crews were called to a home at 57 Shanly Street, near Bloor Street and Dovercourt Road, around 7:30 p.m. for "unknown trouble," Det. Jason Shankaran told CBC Toronto. A male, aged 43, was found in an upstairs apartment in the house, he said.
