CanadaGirl charged in Saskatoon playground assault
Police investigating video of apparent attack on woman in Saskatoon park
SASKATOON — Police in Saskatoon are investigating a video that appears to show young boys swarming, punching and kicking a woman at a playground while some other boys stand by laughing. The images recorded Monday evening show at least four boys attacking the woman, who suffered several bruises and cuts to her entire body, including many across her back. The assault continues, even as she falls to the ground and tries to protect herself, but she eventually manages to get up and walk away after her attackers leave. Bonnie Halcrow tells CTVNews.
A girl is facing charges in two Saskatoon playground assaults, one of which was captured on video.
The first assault happened on the evening of May 13 when two girls reported being assaulted by several youths in, said in a release.
The second assault happened a week later on May 20 when a woman said she was assaulted by a number of youth, police said.
Mother feared for 10-year-old’s safety during Saskatoon playground attack
Bonnie Halcrow says she was attacked by a group of boys in a Saskatoon playground after she tried recording them throwing rocks and sticks. While she was being beaten by a group of children in Saskatoon’s Pleasant Hill neighbourhood, a mother said she could only hope her daughter was OK. Bonnie Halcrow said everything started shortly after 7 p.m. CT on Monday when she brought her 10-year-old daughter and the girl’s friend to the playground in Pleasant Hill Park.
The second assault was recorded by a witness.
Minor injuries were reported by the victims in both assaults.
Police said a 13-year-old girl is now charged with assault in both incidents. Her name cannot be released under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
She appeared Friday morning in Saskatoon provincial court and was released to the care of her parents.
The Crown argued for the girl to be placed under a curfew, which was denied by the judge.
The girl was also released on the condition she not attend St. Mary’s School or have contact with any of the victims, or anyone who appeared in the video.
She will be back in court on June 6.
A number of other youth were identified but cannot be charged as they are under the age of 12, police said.
The two playground assaults, along with several other incidents, continue to be investigated by Saskatoon police.
R. Kelly has been charged with 11 new counts of sexual assault and abuse.
These new charges reportedly stem from an incident in January 2010 and carry a potential maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
