Calgary has been tapped to host the World Petroleum Congress, which will see some of the world’s top players in oil and gas descend on the city in 2023.

After months of lobbying member countries, Calgary was selected on the fourth ballot in St. Petersburg, Russia, early Sunday, edging out fellow finalist Bake, Azerbaijan, with 21 votes to their 20. Also in the running were Dubai in the United Arab Emirates; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Astana, Kazakhstan.

Held every three years, the event routinely attracts heads of state, energy ministers and c-suite executives from around the world.

Calgary house prices down 4.3% compared with last year

House prices in Calgary were down 4.3 per cent in May year over year as the local market remains overstocked, according to the latest statistics from the Canadian Real Estate Association. The MLS home price index benchmark for Calgary sits at $418,300. That's down 7.28 per cent from five years ago, and 4.34 per cent from three years ago, CREA said in its monthly report. The average price for a home sold in May this year in Alberta was $388,568 compared with $394,648 last May. Benchmark prices were also down 3.6 per cent in Edmonton, 3.9 per cent in Regina and 1.3 per cent in Saskatoon, CREA reported.

Calgary last hosted the event in 2000, with some 2,500 delegates from 97 countries in attendance. For the 24th edition of the event, the city expects to see representatives from 80 countries and some 5,500 delegates, estimating about $65 million in economic stimulus for Calgary.

“Calgary’s bid was strong and demonstrated significant municipal and industry support, while showcasing the benefits of hosting in a city that’s bursting with energetic community spirit and a welcoming western hospitality,” said Denis Painchaud, chairman of WPC Canada, in a statement

The event, which will be held in September, will be hosted by both the BMO Centre and the Telus Convention Centre, using an estimated 25 hotels.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said Calgary is eager to welcome world leaders from the energy sector.

“We are thrilled to host the 2023 World Petroleum Congress,” he said in a statement.

“Calgary is the ultimate host city and WPC is close to our hearts; we invite everybody to be a part of our energy and we are excited to showcase Canada’s innovative energy sector.”
