Police arrest 33-year-old man, seek more victims in alleged rental scam

Police arrest 33-year-old man, seek more victims in alleged rental scam Police west of Toronto say they've arrested a man in what they describe as an alleged rental fraud that's taken in at least $20,000 to date. Peel Regional Police say the alleged scam involved placing ads for a rental room on Kijiji. Between October 2018 and May 2019, police allege the man would convince people to pay for first and/or last month's rent for a room in Mississauga, Ont. They say that once the alleged victims had sent payment via e-transfer, the man would cease contact. Police did not indicate how many people have been taken in by the alleged scam, but say they believe there are more than those who have come forward to date.

A dual Canadian-British citizen accused of abducting her now four-year-old daughter from Vancouver Island has been arrested by RCMP, years after leaving B.C.

Lauren Ann Etchells, 31, allegedly defied a court order and boarded a WestJet flight from Vancouver to London's Gatwick Airport with her daughter Kaydance, her new partner, and their newborn child in 2016.

Kaydance Page Etchells, now 4, was reported missing by her mother Tasha Brown, Etchells' estranged wife.

On Thursday, the Saanich Police Department announced Etchells and Kaydance had been found travelling in a dinghy in the English Channel, along with Etchells' partner and her parents.

Police said Etchells and her parents were arrested for offences relating to child neglect and immigration and have pleaded guilty.

A statement said Kaydence and her half-brother, the newborn in 2016, have been placed into foster care as the case is "worked through."

More to come.

Push to punish 911 callers builds after latest Amber Alert.
Some people are asking whether those who call 911 to complain about Amber Alerts should be fined or charged for tying up emergency lines unnecessarily. "Somebody calling because they're upset because they got woken up in the middle of the night isn't an emergency, so you're compromising public safety," said OPP Staff Sgt. Stacey Whaley. People who do so are "immoral," Whaley said. "The reason we're doing this is to pull out all stops to save the life of a child, and if someone is complaining because their sleep is compromised over that, it's hard to understand.
