Petr Holub has seen patrons of all kinds walk through the doors of his Canmore Brazilian barbecue restaurant.

But on Sunday night, a small black bear, possibly enticed by the dinnertime aroma coming from Gaucho Brazilian Barbecue, wandered in to take a look around the Main Street hotspot before reluctantly leaving without any of the restaurant’s spicy garlic brisket or rosemary pork loin.

“I was behind the bar and I saw people jumping up on the tables,” Holub said of the ursine invader, who he said strolled in the open door about 7 p.m.

After going inside the restaurant at a healthy trot, surveillance video posted by the restaurant shows the bear lingering for about five seconds before turning around and going back outside.

Holub said the bruin returned to longingly peer in a window before leaving empty-pawed.

In his five years in Canmore, Holub has never seen a bear in the restaurant, much less taking a stroll on the mountain town’s main drag.
