Daniel James Hicks, commonly known in Saskatoon as Sailor Dan, has died at the age of 65.

Hicks died at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon on Tuesday around 2:30 a.m., according to Ministry of Justice spokesman Noel Busse. Hicks was on remand at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre at the time of his death.

It happened shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of McKercher Drive when police stopped the vehicle in which he was a passenger. According to Saskatoon police, the woman behind the wheel was arrested for impaired driving, and police told the man he was free to leave. He didn't leave. Instead, police say he attempted to open the police vehicle's doors and attacked the two officers.

Dan Hicks — better known as Sailor Dan — is well-known throughout the city for his infamous sailboat drawing that sells for a sketch. He was born and raised in Saskatoon and has no intentions of ever leaving the city. My friend Daryl and I tracked him down to talk about the city he calls home.

Foul play is not suspected nor is an overdose of any kind, Busse said in an email.

The provincial coroner is investigating the death of Hicks, as he was in custody.

Hicks was known around Saskatoon for selling his sketches of ships on the streets.
