Some time during the early morning hours of Aug. 5, 1989, a tiny red-headed toddler named Casey Bohun went missing from her bed in Delta, B.C..

The fate of the girl — including rumours that she was spirited away from her troubled family to live elsewhere under a new identity — still haunts those who worked the case.

“She was three years old, same age as my own daughter at the time,” says retired detective Mike Leary, 62, who worked on the case for nine years when he was with the Criminal Investigation Branch in Delta.

“It was the August long weekend,” said Leary. Casey’s parents were separated; her father, Don, had moved to Kelowna. Casey’s mother Barb was living with a new boyfriend, Jonathan Poile, Casey and a one-year-old, Stacy. The family had spent the day with Barb’s sister Beverly at their mother’s home in Maple Ridge.

At around 11 p.m. the group returned to Casey’s home in North Delta. Beverly stayed for a beer. Casey had been acting up, so Barb put her to bed. After Beverly finished her beer, Poile left for 10 or 15 minutes to show Beverly how to get onto the Alex Fraser Bridge.

Barb told police she had a headache so she took a couple of Tylenol 3s and fell asleep on the sofa.

What happened during the next nine hours remains a mystery.

“At about 10 o’clock in the morning a couple, Jon’s friends, came over. Jon was filling up a little pool in the back yard and the woman asked Barb where Casey was. The woman went to take a peek at Casey in bed. She wasn’t there,” said Leary.

The family called the police and one of the biggest searches ever held in the Lower Mainland was launched.

“It was a massive search, with bloodhounds and volunteers — it went on for days,” said Leary, who wasn’t on the investigation at the time, but took it over in 2000.

Leary never got to meet Barbara Bohun. She leaped to her death from the Pattullo Bridge in 2001.

Although Bohun joined Alcoholics Anonymous after Casey’s disappearance, her life continued to be troubled. In the mid-1990s, Poile left Bohun to take a job teaching English in Korea, leaving Barb alone to cope with two daughters — Stacy, who had been one at the time of Casey’s disappearance, and Shona, who was born the subsequent year.

Shortly before Barb’s suicide, both of her daughters were apprehended by social workers concerned over her methods of discipline. Stacy was taken into foster care (she later accused her foster parent, rock star Tim Bachman, of sexual abuse) and Shona was sent to live with her dad in South Korea.

After Bohun’s suicide, The Province newspaper reported that police believed Poile may have key information: “We believe he has not given us all the information that he has in his possession, which would assist us in finding out what happened to Casey,” Leary said.

Poile quickly got off the phone when Province reporter Peter Clough reached him in 2001, and has reportedly declined requests to speak with Delta police.

The case isn’t closed. Sgt. Guy Leeson of the Delta Major Crimes Section said: “All missing person’s files stay active until we resolve it either by finding the person or (human) remains.”

Leeson said anniversary stories almost always generate tips: “As people age, as their life circumstances change, I’d be hoping that somebody who does know something and didn’t share it might now have a reason to come forward.”

Over the years police have worked through several theories: Casey may have been kidnapped by a stranger, she may have been killed by someone close to her either by accident or intentionally, or she may have been removed from her mother’s house in a rescue operation by someone concerned for her welfare.

Casey’s grandmother, Olga Bohun, 93, of Kelowna says she has never had any dream, or inkling of any kind, as to Casey’s fate: “We loved her, she was a beautiful little girl.”

Olga said her son, Don, Casey’s biological father, never recovered emotionally, in spite of being cleared by police.

“It’s been a hard battle for him all these years,” said Bohun.

Casey’s grandmother said the family didn’t have the means to conduct a private investigation but she has a few theories.

“Maybe her mother got angry at her, because she had a short temper and she was on drugs. She could have just grabbed her by the feet and swung her against the wall. She used to put her under running water or close the cupboard and leave her in there,” she said.

Olga said: “I feel she’s alive. I don’t know why.”

That Casey is alive somewhere, that she was taken by someone who wanted a child to love, that makes the disappearance bearable for Olga: “Hopefully she’s alive somewhere enjoying life.”
