The former spouse of the woman who was set on fire on Friday night in Quebec City was arrested by provincial police in Drummondville on Saturday afternoon.

The 39-year-old man was arrested after a warrant was issued for attempted murder and aggravated assault. He was located on Girardin St. in Drummondville.

Around 10 p.m. on Friday, Quebec City police were called to Arago St. West after receiving reports of a woman had been set on fire by a man who fled the scene.

The 27-year-old woman was taken to hospital in critical condition. She suffered severe burns, particularly on her face, back and hands.

The victim’s life was still in danger on Saturday afternoon, according to Étienne Doyon Quebec City police spokesperson.

Quebec City police investigators are on their way to meet the suspect at the Sûreté du Québec offices in Drummondville.

Multiple people witnessed the incident, including the mother and the children of the victim. The kids are in with their grandmother, they were taken to hospital as a precaution, but they were not injured, according to Doyon.

A witness described the scene to the Presse canadienne. Martyn Allard was sitting on his balcony when he saw the woman running away from someone who who seemed to be holding a torch.

Allard said he only noticed the woman was on fire by taking a closer look. “I was shocked. She was screaming: ‘I’m on fire, I’m on fire, help me.’ ”

The woman lost consciousness not long after, according to Allard.
