A prominent Chatham eye doctor facing allegations of misconduct, incompetence, and making inappropriate claims to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan is “itching” to tell his side of the story.

Chatham ophthalmologist Christopher Anjema, who gained notoriety recently for being the highest-billing doctor in the region and fourth highest in Ontario, wrote a Facebook post Thursday thanking people for supporting him.

“As many of you may know, I have been in the news recently,” he wrote on the Anjema Eye Institute Facebook page. “I don’t mind saying in front of friends that this has been a stressful time for me, my family, and the 24 people on the Anjema Eye Institute team. I am writing now to say how grateful we all are for the many generous expressions of support which we have received, and to offer my personal appreciation for the community’s continued confidence.”

Andrew Berry, B.C. man accused of killing daughters, to testify in double murder trial Andrew Berry, an Oak Bay man accused of murdering his two young daughters, will be taking the stand in B.C. Supreme Court, his defence team says. Andrew Berry's defence lawyer Kevin McCullough began presenting his evidence Wednesday morning, revealing that Berry will testify that he did not stab his daughters to death. Berry is on trial for two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of six-year-old Chloe and four-year-old Aubrey. He has pleaded not guilty. The two little girls were found dead in his Oak Bay apartment on Christmas Day, 2017. Berry was laying, seriously injured, in the bathroom.

Anjema, who has an office in Chatham and one in Sarnia, is accused by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario of professional misconduct for engaging “in an act or omission relevant to the practice of medicine that, having regard to all the circumstances, would reasonably be regarded by members as disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional.”

He has also allegedly “failed to maintain the standard of practice of the profession and/or is incompetent in his care of patients.”

The college’s hearing notice stated he allegedly “engaged in inappropriate submission of claims and/or billing to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan and/or to patients, and/or inappropriate ordering or conducting of tests and investigations, which constitutes disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional conduct.”

The college has put restrictions on Anjema while they probe his “standard of practice.” He is only allowed to perform blepharoplasty procedures — plastic surgery on eyelids — under the watch of a clinical supervisor.

Anjema’s billing practices made headlines last month after the Toronto Star published a database of the Top 100 billings by physicians between 2011-12 and 2017-18.

The database showed that Anjema billed OHIP $4.1 million in the 2017-2018 fiscal year, and $31.4 million since 2011. That made him the highest-billing doctor in the Erie St. Clair LHIN — the Windsor/Chatham/Sarnia region — and the fourth highest in Ontario.

“The recent publicity comes with some questions, which will be properly answered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario through their hearing process, which I am confident will result in an evidence-based outcome in the interests of patients,” Anjema wrote on Facebook. “As you might imagine, I am itching to say much more — and I wish I could say it right now — but I respect and must abide by my profession’s process which I fully support and in which I am fully engaged.”
