With escalating gang violence, there seems to be many people driving around the Lower Mainland with illegal firearms. Surrey RCMP today announced the arrests of two more linked to the Brothers Keepers after a firearm was found in a car.

Two young men connected to the Brothers Keepers gang are facing a series of charges after Surrey RCMP found a restricted firearm in a vehicle that crashed into another car last week.

Members of Surrey’s Gang Enforcement Unit arrested Gurpreet Multani, 24, and Jaskaran Johal, 21, on Sept. 26 after they jumped from a black Jeep Cherokee that struck a vehicle at 128 Street and 64 Avenue and fled the scene.

“A subsequent search of the suspect vehicle yielded a loaded handgun,” Const. Richard Wright said in a news release.

Johal is charged with several firearms counts, as well as obstruction of a police officer and breach of his recognizance, while Multani is facing counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, obstruction of a police officer, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

“Both men are known to police, have links to the Brothers Keepers crime group and have been remanded in custody while the investigation continues,” Wright said.

Their next court appearance is set for Oct. 11.

At the time of the arrest, the Gang Enforcement Team was doing patrols in the area.

“Targeted enforcement is enabling our members to make important interdictions like this one which has led to the arrests of two known gang members, and taken a loaded gun out of the hands of criminals,” Insp. Mike Hall said.

At the time of his latest arrest, Johal was on bail on charges of assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon related to an incident in Surrey in April.

And he is also awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in Vancouver Provincial Court to possession for the purpose of trafficking in Burnaby on Dec. 23, 2016.

Johal was also fined $500 in 2017 for a breach of court-ordered conditions. In March of that year, he was stopped by B.C.’s anti-gang Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit because his vehicle was missing its “N” for a novice driver.

The Brothers Keepers, which is aligned with the Hells Angels Hardside Chapter, has been caught up in the bloody Lower Mainland gang war that has left several people dead and others wounded.

The Brothers Keepers is in conflict with rivals from the United Nations, as well as former Brothers members who broke away two years ago and aligned themselves with the Red Scorpion gang.

In the last two months, Hardside Hells Angels Suminder (Allie) Grewal was shot to death outside a south Surrey Starbucks, and Red Scorpion Justin Haevischer was gunned down in front of an Aldergrove McDonald’s.
