Shannon Dawn Rayner, 40, pleaded guilty to three charges of infanticide and one charge of concealing a body.Shannon Dawn Rayner, 40, was charged last year after police found the remains of two infants in storage totes at a property in Sherwood where she was living at the time. After three failed pregnancies, helping a giraffe carry her newborn calf to term was a tall order for Calgary Zoo officials. Eight-year-old giraffe Emara gave birth to a bouncing baby boy Sunday, though she’ s struggled with pregnancy complications in the past.

A newborn giraffe passed away due to birth defects that resulted in a handful of health complications, Calgary Zoo officials said Monday.

The giraffe calf, born Sept. 29, passed away only days later because of an under-developed urethra, a tube needed for the removal of urine, and other birth defects. Since the giraffe was unable to properly urinate, toxins built up and the zoo’s animal care team was unable to save him.

This is the fourth failed pregnancy for the male calf’s mother Emara, who has experienced two miscarriages; she also had a newborn that died within 24 hours of birth. The eight-year-old giraffe was given progesterone supplements to give her the best shot at a successful pregnancy this time around.

CALGARY —A newborn giraffe has died at the Calgary Zoo after officials say it failed to nurse. It was the first time ever reported that a giraffe was given pregnancy supplements in a similar fashion to a human’s prenatal care, so the zoo was hopeful the calf would pull through after being born.

“He was loved from the moment we found out Emara was pregnant and will not be forgotten. We continue to monitor Emara and are supporting our team through this devastating outcome,” the Calgary Zoo said on Twitter.

The zoo thanked people for the kind thoughts and well-wishes for Emara and her care team following the loss of the baby giraffe.
