As Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is expected in Calgary on Saturday, high-profile Liberal candidate Chrystia Freeland joined Edmonton-Mill Woods candidate Amarjeet Sohi, where the pair doubled down on their progressive stance and dedication to building the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, even if a coalition government is formed.

Freeland joined Sohi Saturday afternoon at his campaign office in Mill Woods for a rally with a crowd of supporters and volunteers in the final push ahead of Monday’s federal election.

B.C. Lions lose quarterback Mike Reilly to broken wrist The B.C. Lions fought for their playoff lives Saturday without the services of starting quarterback Mike Reilly. The veteran signal caller suffered a broken left wrist on the Lions’ second offensive possession of the game Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium against the Edmonton Eskimos. The Eskimos would win 19-6, clinching a playoff berth and eliminating the Lions from playoff contention. Eskimos defender Kwatu Boateng took Reilly to the turf just as he launched an incomplete pass, landing on the left wrist of the Lions quarterback as the pair went to the ground.

When asked while speaking with reporters before the rally began if the Liberals would still support the Trans Mountain pipeline if a coalition government was formed with the NDP and Green Party, Sohi said his party’s commitment to the project is “unwavering.”

“This is a project that is so important not only for Alberta but for the whole country. We have been selling our resources at a discount for too many years to the only single customer that we have,” Sohi said.

“Ninety-nine per cent of Alberta’s oil is sold to the United States. (The) Stephen Harper government, (the) Jason Kenney government, did nothing to build a pipeline to get our resources to non-U.S. markets. We are the government that has taken this task very seriously and we are going to see this project through.”

Trudeau accuses Tories of running 'one of the dirtiest, nastiest campaigns'

Trudeau accuses Tories of running 'one of the dirtiest, nastiest campaigns' MONTREAL — Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau says the Conservatives are running one of the dirtiest, nastiest campaigns based on disinformation that Canada has ever seen. Trudeau went on to say that Canadians are saddened to see some parties running polarizing and negative campaigns using tactics imported from other countries. Over the weekend, a security threat forced Trudeau to wear a bulletproof vest at an event, and the next day he lamented the divisive nature of the campaign. He said the Conservatives are adopting the politics of fear and negativity, though he did not blame them for the security threat.

Sohi also said building the pipeline does not hinder the Liberal’s ability to meet the Paris Agreement climate targets.

“Every single cent that is earned through the sale of this pipeline or through the revenue from taxes that will be generated from this pipeline will be invested in clean technologies in renewable energy and to do more to protect our environment,” Sohi said.

“I think this is a false choice where people say you cannot grow your economy, you cannot develop your resources in a sustainable, responsible way and protect the environment.”

Freeland and Sohi hammered home the message to Liberal supporters that Sohi has been a progressive voice in cabinet who has fought to bring funding to Edmonton and Alberta.

In her speech to supporters, Freeland said Sohi has a local understanding and local pride, bringing both to the work he has done while in Ottawa. She mentioned the 50 Street overpass and expanding the LRT.

Edmonton Eskimos activate quarterback Harris from six-game injured list

Edmonton Eskimos activate quarterback Harris from six-game injured list EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos activated quarterback Trevor Harris from the six-game injured list Monday. Harris went on the six-game injured list after suffering an injury to his throwing arm in Edmonton's 33-17 loss to the Calgary Stampeders on Sept. 7. Logan Kilgore started four games during Harris's absence, leading the Eskimos to a 2-2 record. During that span, Kilgore was 103-of-153 passing (67.3 per cent) for 1,115 yards with four touchdowns and eight interceptions. In 12 games, Harris completed 316-of-441 passes (71.7 per cent) for 3,706 yards with 15 TDs and just four interceptions.

“This kind of work can only be done by someone who knows the community, who loves it, who lives in it,” Freeland said.

“Having Amarjeet, a strong, effective progressive voice, at the cabinet table has been absolutely essential in shaping policies that are essential for Alberta.”

She spoke about building pipelines and the Liberal government’s purchase of the Trans Mountain pipeline.

“That is not just rhetoric, that is actual action and we did that because we understand that the environment and the economy go together,” said Freeland. “We need to have effective action on climate change and we also need to be realistic and understand that Canada, that Alberta, needs to be able to get its resources to market.”

City Coun. Ben Henderson also advocated for Sohi on Friday.

Speaking to Postmedia, Henderson said if Sohi is defeated, not having a voice in cabinet won’t be good for Edmonton.

“We were spoiled the last couple of years because we’ve had a voice in cabinet,” Henderson said.

“Sohi has proven that he’s been there for us.”

Henderson also mentioned Sohi’s hand in the Yellowhead freeway project, LRT funding, affordable housing and the 50 Street overpass.

“In Amarjeet’s case, because he came from municipal council, his understanding of the needs of the city makes a difference.”

After her event with Sohi, Freeland also made an appearance with Edmonton Centre Liberal candidate Randy Boissonnault.

Trudeau is also in Alberta Saturday, with a rally planned Saturday night in Calgary.
