The family of an Ottawa woman who was attacked and beaten while vacationing in Tulum, Mexico are rallying support for the woman as she recovers in hospital.

Alexandra “Lexie” York was on a family vacation, according to family members now posting updates from her hospital room, when she was allegedly “severely beaten” by another guest of the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum where she had been staying.

A flight attendant and a cheerleader and coach with the Kanata Knights Football club, York arrived at the hotel on Nov. 10 for the family vacation and was due to meet her mother the following day.

York was rushed to hospital in Playa Del Carmen and later transferred to a hospital in Cancun, where she remains recovering from “gruelling” surgeries.

After helping the woman , officers secured the area and began the search with a canine unit for the suspect, but to no avail. In an abundance of caution, two nearby elementary schools were also put on lockdown. The victim was taken to hospital , where she remains, recovering from her injuries.

After waiting approximately 48 hours to reduce the swelling, doctors performed more than nine hours of reconstructive surgery.

York had suffered multiple facial fractures, a fractured orbital bone and several lacerations to her face and neck.

In a separate posting Monday, the Kanata Knights asked the community to keep York in their thoughts and prayers as she recovers.

“Lexie is a beautiful, intelligent, kind hearted, generous and trusting young woman,” the Knights executive wrote in a Facebook posting.

“She is a loving daughter, sister and auntie, who cares about everyone around her… a great friend and co-worker to all.

The Knights pledged to match donations up to $1,000. The GoFundMe page had already reached $36,000, with more than 350 individual donors by Monday evening.

Friends and family operating the GoFundMe page thanked the community for the outpouring of donations.
