Family members of the young victims of Danyiel James Walker solemnly filed out of the courtroom Friday as the disturbing details of his sex crimes were read into the record following his guilty plea to 44 charges.

Walker, 41, appeared emotionless in the prisoner’s dock, reading along with facts of the case, now bearded with his hair grown long and looking much different from images circulated when he was first arrested in January, when police feared — correctly — that he had abused more victims.

He said little, telling Ontario Court Justice David Berg only that he understood the consequences of his plea and that he had made the plea “of my own free will.”

The plea entered Friday covered more than a decade of sexual abuse with multiple young boys, beginning when some were 8 years old and continuing for years through a pattern of grooming.

His victims — their identities are shielded by a publication ban — would visit one of several homes where Walker would entertain them with Xbox video games, pizza and soft drinks. That would soon escalate to Walker showing them images and videos from his vast collection of child pornography, then engaging in sexually assaulting his young victims.

He pleaded guilty Friday to multiple counts of sexual assault of a minor, invitation to sexual touching, indecent acts, and possessing, distributing and making his own child pornography.

Friday’s plea did not include further charges Walker faced after police received a report alleging he took pictures and sexually assaulted a vulnerable child with limited mobility and speech. It’s alleged to have happened at the Roger Neilson House hospice, where Walker’s 11-year-old son had been a patient before his death in November 2015.

That evidence could still surface in court as Crown prosecutors now want Walker branded a dangerous offender, with a psychiatric assessment pending.

Prosecutors noted in court Friday there were “serious health concerns” with some witnesses the Crown intended to call at Walker’s dangerous offender hearing, set to commence in November 2020.

Walker was first reported to authorities in February 2018 after he posted video clips and images to social media sites of minors exposing their genitals, one of a young girl naked from the waist down, one of a pubescent boy.

Walker was placed under surveillance and arrested after police tailed him from his home at 95 Placel Rd. in Rockcliffe Park to a ByWard Market restaurant on Jan. 30.

Police raided the home — he had other residences listed on Roger Road and Southgate Road in the Alta Vista area — and confirmed it was his IP address that uploaded the pornography.

The search warrant turned up 34,000 images of child pornography and more than 26,000 videos, many of which have still not been categorized. A total of 1,784 videos were contained in the evidence to secure the guilty plea.

Police found images and videos uploaded from his computer by a user named “Dan” containing graphic images of a 4-year-old girl and others of boys as young as 6.

Assistant Crown Attorney Sabrina Goldfarb said the collection “runs the gamut” and a “significant percentage” was created by Walker himself.

Much of the child pornography entered as evidence was too disturbing to describe, as were many of the acts of sexual abuse he committed against the four victims listed in the charges.

The sexual assaults progressed over the years as Walker gave his victims Mike’s Hard Lemonade and other alcohol before sexually assaulting them. Walker would exchange text messages and engage in online chats with his victims and encourage “repeat sexual encounters,” prosecutors said.

Police found Walker had also recorded video chats with children, including some who have not been identified.

Several victims went to police after seeing Walker in media reports following his arrest on child pornography charges. One victim told detectives he had been sexually assaulted from age 8 to 15, estimating Walker assaulted him at least 100 times and as many as 300 times. Another victim said the assaults began when he was a teenager and continued until he was 24.

Walker will now undergo a psychiatric assessment while awaiting a hearing where the Crown will seek a dangerous offender designation, with three weeks set from November 2020 through February 2021.
