Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an "interaction" between a Toronto police officer and a member of the public in the west end early Sunday, police say.

The incident occurred west of Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue. Toronto police were dispatched at about 1:20 a.m., according to Const. Alex Li, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service.

"What I can confirm at this point in time is that a member of our service had an interaction with a member of the public, and as a result, the SIU has invoked their mandate," Li said.

Toronto paramedics said a man believed to be in his 40s was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries from that area at that time.

Police are guarding a scene in an alley that connects Vanauley Street, north of Queen Street West and west of Spadina Avenue.

A police cruiser appears to have boxed in a van, which is pinned against a building. The front of the cruiser and the front of the van appear to be damaged.

No other information was available.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
