  Wintry, blustery weather mixes across N.L. Roads are slick as a mix of snow and rain hits Newfoundland, while a winter storm is brewing in Labrador. Environment Canada has a special weather statement in effect for the Avalon and Burin Peninsulas and parts of the north coast of the island.A mix of snow and rain will make for some messy driving conditions. Up to 12 centimetres of snow is expected in total for inland areas, with as much as 50 millimetres of rainfall.Clarenville schools are closed for the day due to the winter storm, while other schools have closed for the morning with updates to come.

Get ready for a little bit of everything this week.

It starts off well enough today with a high of 2 C.

Early risers will, however, be greeted by a wind chill as low as -18 (so you may not want to be an early riser).

There will be a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day and a 40 per cent chance of flurries in the morning.

Winds could be gusting up to 40 km/h by later this afternoon.

Tonight, the temperature shouldn’t budge, or at least not by much, staying near 2 C.

A mix of rain and snow is expected to begin around midnight.

There’s a risk of rain all day Monday and both the high and low will be 3 C.

Tuesday, at first, replicates Monday’s conditions with a high of 3 C and a mess of wet precipitation.

Things shift gears later in the day when rain turns to snow and the temperature drops – and drops – and finally bottoms out at -15 C.

The cold snap continues Wednesday with a high of -7 C and low of -19 C. Expect a mix of sun, clouds and flurries.

Thursday stays cold with a high of only -11 C but at least bright, sunny skies are in the forecast. Expect a low of -15 C Thursday night.

Friday sees the return of clouds and snow. The temperature tops out at -6 C and slides to -8 C at night.

Using the meteorological binoculars, it looks like there may be flurries on Saturday with a high in the vicinity of -3 C.

Normals for this time of the year are highs near -2 C and lows just above -9 C.

Sunrise is at 7:28 a.m. today and the sunset is at 4:20 p.m.

As December ticks forward, it won’t be much longer now until we steal back a few wisps of daylight from the cold clutches of the long, dark night.

A blizzard warning for western Newfoundland and the south coast of the island has prompted some schools to close, as Environment Canada warns of snow moving across the province Monday. Up to 30 centimetres is expected to fall in Corner Brook, Bay St. George, Burgeo, Gros Morne and up along the western side of the Northern Peninsula.Winds will be gusting 80 km/h through the day and reach up to 100 km/h along the coast Monday night and into Tuesday morning."It is definitely a busy start to the week," says Todd Anstett, a meteorologist with the Gander weather office. "It's pretty much warnings everywhere, it feels like.
