Two of eight people charged in connection with the death of Edmonton woman Tiki Brook-Lyn Laverdiere have now pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder. Mavis Quinn Takakenew, 55, entered her guilty plea on Monday in North Battleford, defence lawyer Lisa Watson confirmed.

Two of eight people charged in connection with the death of Edmonton woman Tiki Brook-Lyn Laverdiere have now pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder.

Mavis Quinn Takakenew, 55, entered her guilty plea on Monday in North Battleford, defence lawyer Lisa Watson confirmed.

Last month, Brent Checkosis, 18, also pleaded guilty to the accessory charge. Both sentencing hearings took place on Monday and sentencing decisions are expected on March 25.

A publication ban was imposed on Takakenew and Checkosis’s sentencing hearings until the trials for the six remaining co-accused are concluded. This is usually done to protect a potential jury pool from being tainted.

Laverdiere was in the North Battleford and Thunderchild First Nation area to attend the funeral of her friend, 20-year-old Tristen Cook-Buckle, on April 27, 2019.

After the funeral, she was reported to have said she wanted to go home to Edmonton, but her family did not hear from her after May 1. She was reported missing on May 12, 2019.

Her remains were discovered outside North Battleford on July 11, 2019.

Six people still remain before the courts.

  • Nicole Cook: Edmonton woman and mother of Cook-Buckle charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle. She was arrested on July 31, 2019. Her next scheduled court appearance is Feb. 21.
  • Nikita Sandra Cook, 21: Onion Lake Cree Nation woman charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping. She was arrested on Aug. 15, 2019. Her case has been committed for trial at North Battleford Court of Queen’s Bench.

  • Shayla Orthner, 28: North Battleford woman charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, interfering with human remains and vehicle theft. She was arrested on July 20, 2019. Her case has been committed for trial.
  • Danita Thomas, 32: North Battleford woman charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, interfering with human remains and vehicle theft. She was arrested on July 23, 2019. Her next scheduled court appearance is Aug. 4.
  • Soaring Eagle Whitstone: Onion Lake Cree Nation woman charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, offering indignity to human remains and vehicle theft. She was arrested on Aug. 6, 2019. Her next scheduled court appearance is Aug. 17.
  • Jesse Sangster, 23: Edmonton man charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, interfering with human remains and vehicle theft. He was arrested on July 28, 2019. His next scheduled court appearance is March. 2.
