Another experiment showed that cats who are constantly with other conspecifics are together, can distinguish their names from the others.

Another finding that came as a surprise: Cats and dogs can understand their name, but cannot associate it with their personality. When the owner calls, they tend to combine this with a positive experience. The animals have learned that the names are usually followed by something pleasant: they get a petting or food.
