The incident happened shortly after 11 a.m., approximately one kilometer above the Tallus Ridge subdivision. Rescue boats and aircraft are scouring the waters off English Bay this morning for a missing person who reportedly fell from a cargo freighter.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre dispatched its 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron and a Cormorant helicopter from Comox to Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet at around 9:15 a.m., while the Canadian has sent two rescue vessels from its Kitsilano base and a hovercraft with divers from its Sea Island base.
Boat flips with multiple people on board on Lake Winnipeg
A search for missing boaters is underway Saturday after a boat capsized on the massive Lake Winnipeg near Bélair, Man. A spokesperson for STARS Air Ambulance confirmed multiple people were onboard the watercraft when it flipped in the area around Lester Beach. Fatima Khawaja says the air emergency crew landed and assessed the scene but did not transport any people from the area. RCMP Cpl. Julie Courchaine said a witness on the shore saw an overturned boat and people in the water. Police responded to the call shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. RCMP and other first responders and partners are on the scene now, police said.
Transport Canada’s red Dash 8 surveillance plane and the Vancouver police marine unit have also joined the search.
The search centre around the 200-metre cargo ship Pilatus Venture, a four-year-old bulk carrier out of Hong Kong that has anchored off Vancouver since June 4.
