An Edmonton-based real life treasure hunt has been suspended after the company found evidence of fraudulent activity.

GoldHunt is a treasure hunt where the company hides gold and silver pieces valued at $100,000 in Calgary and Edmonton. Those hunting for the treasure are charged between $25 to $35 for a map directing them to the loot.

In a news release, GoldHunt said that while they cannot provide specific information that led to the fraudulent activity there has “been a clear violation of the terms and conditions” and the RCMP are investigating. Both Calgary and Edmonton hunts have been suspended.

This is the case of Malakoff, who has long haunted the mind of artist Grégory Buchert.

On the morning of June 20, when this year’s hunt was launched, GoldHunt also suffered a major DDoS attack. The website was flooded with fake web traffic in order to overwhelm the company’s servers.

“The team has not found any evidence to correlate the DDoS attack with any fraudulent activities and furthermore, the website was back up and running with additional security measures within less than 20 minutes,” the release states.

GoldHunt found no evidence of data loss and continues to monitor the situation. The company said all payment is also secure as it does not receive or store that information.

The company said it has been advised to not share further information as an RCMP investigation is underway.
