The mayor of Chanteix, in Corrèze, was called for a burglary taking place in a house in the town, Sunday July 12. As his statute permits, he was able to stop one of the burglars in the act, threatening him with a wooden club.

A car parked on the edge of the property

A family member who owns the house raised the alert after hearing suspicious noises in the house. Jean Mouzat rushed to the spot. The city councilor, aged 65, then saw "a car parked in a wooded road behind the property" , he told local radio. This confirms the suspicion of an ongoing burglary .

After calling the gendarmes, he took up a position near the car, armed with an "wooden club" . Moments later, a young man introduced himself to him, posing as a mushroom picker. Jean Mouzat was not fooled and held the thief at bay with his club until the gendarmes arrived.

They had hidden their booty in the woods

His accomplice was arrested in a wood adjoining the property. This is where the burglars had stored their loot. "Household appliances and other personal and family effects" , specifies France Bleu. The two suspects, aged 22 and 23, were taken into custody and tried the next day.

The young man arrested by the mayor was sentenced to 105 hours of community service. His accomplice was sentenced to four months in prison to which is added the revocation of an 18-month suspension. He was therefore imprisoned for 22 months.
