MEXICO (Reuters) - Mexico has recorded 688 deaths from the coronavirus epidemic in the past twenty-four hours, the health ministry said on Friday, bringing the total death toll to 46,688, the third heaviest death toll in the world after the United States and Brazil.

The Central American country is now ahead of Great Britain.

A daily record of new cases of contamination, 8,458, was also reported by the Mexican authorities, for a total of 424,637 confirmed infections.

The government has said in the past that the actual number of people infected is certainly much higher than the number of confirmed cases.
