Baum currently works for the German Football Association and trains the German U18 national team. Between December 2016 and April 2019 he was head coach of FC Augsburg.

Dimitrios Grammozis and the former Bayern professional Mark van Bommel were recently traded as other candidates at Schalke. Van Bommel was a coach at PSV Eindhoven until December 2019.
