The two presidential candidates were neck and neck but it is ultimately the nationalist Ersin Tatar who wins, announced the Electoral Council Sunday evening. The second round took place against the backdrop of tensions in the eastern Mediterranean between Greece and Turkey.

An election in the context of tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean

The election took place in a context of strong tensions around the exploitation of hydrocarbons in the Eastern Mediterranean between Ankara and Athens, main ally of the Republic of Cyprus - member of the European Union (EU) since 2004 - which exercises its authority over the southern two-thirds of the island.

After drilling off Northern Cyprus, the return this week of a Turkish exploration vessel to waters claimed by Greece has stirred up discord and led to condemnation by EU leaders of the provocations by Turkey.

Considering the TRNC as a major piece in its strategy to defend its interests in the Eastern Mediterranean, Ankara had stepped up its support for Ersin Tatar.
