Film Review: Pixar’s ‘Soul’ Recalls The Lofty Ambitions Of The Studio’s Finest

Film Review: Pixar’s ‘Soul’ Recalls The Lofty Ambitions Of The Studio’s Finest There are moments, watching Disney-Pixar’s latest release Soul, in which the ambition of the Emeryville-based animation house astounds in ways it hasn’t quite achieved in years. Moments of abstract expression that feel entirely unique to its new film, and yet wholly in keeping with the DNA that has made Pixar the standard bearer for family animation. The movie, which makes its world premiere bow this evening at a socially distanced London Film Festival screening, tackles existential themes without ever disregarding its core, family audience. And when it’s at its best, Soul is a joy to behold.

Disney has found its new great heroine. In March 2021, the animated film Raya and the Last Dragon will land in the cinema. And according to the trailer, this one will blow our minds.

Euro Cinemas Rep Calls Out Disney For ‘Soul’ Switch To Streaming; Says Theater Operators Are “Shocked & Dismayed” Disney last week moved Pixar’s Soul off of its domestic November 20 date and onto Disney+, where it will now be released December 25 in the U.S. and other global markets where the streaming service is available. Similar to its move with Mulan, the decision has upset European exhibitors who are starved for major new product. The International Union of Cinemas (UNIC), which reps the interests of trade associations and exhibition across 38 countries in Europe and neighboring regions, today said the Soul switch has “shocked and dismayed all cinema operators.

We can see in the trailer, Raya and the Last Dragon has everything to amaze us on the screen. In addition to a magnificent aesthetic, this film will be able to count on rich and original sets, but also on a Tomb Raider / Indiana Jones-style atmosphere at times which should be particularly cool to follow, especially through exciting action sequences. Finally, as is regularly the case with Disney, we will also have the right to a small (or almost) very cute creature called touc-touc that it will be difficult not to like.

It remains to be hoped that the Covid-19 will be history in March 2021 at the risk of seeing this film follow the example of Soul (the last Pixar) and thus land directly on Disney + ...
