Accompanied by several members of his government, the Prime Minister gave a new update on the epidemic situation in France, this Thursday, October 22. Jean Castex notably announced the extension of the curfew to 38 additional departments, as well as in Polynesia. We take stock.

In recent weeks, the government's speeches on the Covid-19 are both expected and feared. The intervention of Jean Castex this Thursday, October 22 was no exception to the rule.

38 new departments concerned by the curfew

Up to now, the curfew has applied in the Ile-de-France region and in eight major cities: Lille, Lyon, Aix-Marseille, Grenoble, Toulouse, Montpellier, Saint-Etienne and Rouen. It will be extended, announced Jean Castex.

The departments of the metropolitan areas mentioned above will also be concerned. In addition, 38 other departments, as well as the territories of French Polynesia will also have to comply with this measure. In total, the curfew will affect 54 departments, or 46 million French people. "The extension of the curfew measure is a preventive measure that I assume" , explained Jean Castex.

These curfews are planned for six weeks, but "depending on the results we will re-evaluate the device, to possibly harden it" , warned Jean Castex. However, the curfew measures will not be able to be felt for at least a week, the Prime Minister further warned.

Jean Castex warned that if the Covid-19 epidemic was not stopped by curfewing 54 departments, "we will have to consider much tougher measures" . "There is still time to avoid it but we don't have much time left" , added the Prime Minister without further clarification

Extended economic aid

Economic support measures "will be extended to all departments falling under the curfew regime" , assured the Prime Minister. He mentioned in particular the solidarity fund, exemptions from social contributions and the extension of loans guaranteed by the state.

115 million for culture

The Minister of Culture, Roselyne Bachelot announced a series of measures for the sector, which has been severely affected since the start of the health crisis and even more with the introduction of the curfew. "The state will be at their side because we need culture and maybe even more during this crisis" , declared the minister.

In detail, 85 million euros in aid will go to live entertainment and 30 million will be dedicated to cinema. The Minister also recalled that the transversal measures, previously mentioned, such as the solidarity fund or exemptions from charges apply well to the sector.
