Aimé Henri Konan Bédié (born May 5, 1934) is an Ivorian politician. He was President of Côte d'Ivoire from 1993 to 1999, and he is currently the President of the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire - African Democratic Rally (PDCI-RDA). Bédié was born in Dadiékro in Daoukro Department.

Ivory Coast's 86-year-old former president Henri Konan Bedie said Sunday that "age is an asset" ahead of being declared his opposition party's candidate for October's tense presidential election. Dubbed the " sphinx of Daoukro " after both his native town and his economy with words, Bedie was

Nicknamed the "Sphinx of Daoukro", his stronghold in the center of Côte d'Ivoire, the former head of state Henri Konan Bédié, the man of "ivoirité", a nationalist or even xenophobic concept, wants his revenge for to become president again, despite his advanced age, 86 years old.

Revenge against President Alassane Ouattara who would have betrayed his word, revenge against the putsch which overthrew him in 1999, revenge finally against those who accuse him of not having known how to manage the heritage of the "father of independence" Félix Houphouët-Boigny.

Ivory Coasts ageing former president Henri Konan Bedie said Saturday he would contest the October 31 presidential election in the worlds top cocoa grower. Dubbed the " sphinx of Daoukro ," (his native town) Bedie speaks sparingly in public, but he has demonstrated a skill for political survival.

Today, in the absence of Laurent Gbagbo and Guillaume Soro, "HKB" is the main opponent in contention against Alassane Ouattara, who is seeking a controversial third term.

The octogenarian, who has been able to discourage all attempts by younger generations to replace him within his party, promises a "victory which will allow the young people of Côte d'Ivoire to have full and complete responsibilities".

Born May 5, 1934 in the village of Dadiékro (center) into a family of cocoa planters, "HKB" wants to be the heir and successor of Houphouët-Boigny, of Baoulé ethnicity like him.

Ambassador at 26, Minister of the Economy at 32, Mr. Bédié, whose career had come to a halt because of accusations of corruption, has overcome these problems to establish himself as the natural dolphin d'Houphouët-Boigny and fully control the movement founded by its elder, the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire (PDCI).

Côte d'Ivoire is sinking into a new political crisis against a backdrop of inter-community tensions.

Aimé Henri Konan Bédié is an Ivorian economist and politician who served as president of Côte d'Ivoire from 1993 to 1999. Bédié was born in Dadiékro, which was located in Daoukro Department of Iffou Region in Lacs District, Ivory Coast.

Henri Konan Bédié Bridge, also known as the HKB Bridge or Third Bridge, is a road bridge and expressway linking the north and south of Abidjan. The 1.5 km (0.93 mi) viaduct crosses the Ébrié Lagoon connecting the districts of Cocody and Marcory.

He launched at this time the concept of ivoirité to exclude from the race for the presidency a certain Alassane Ouattara, known as "ADO", accused of being Burkinabè. Even today, HKB regularly ventures into this area, criticizing "foreigners".

Elected president in 1995 without much competition, he surfs on nationalism but his presidency, undermined by corruption, collapsed in a few hours at Christmas 1999 in the face of a mutiny of soldiers which turned into a putsch, the first in the history of country.

"It is like his presidency, a period of sleep. Today, he wants his revenge on this poorly managed putsch. And on Ouattara, whom he supported (in 2010 and 2015) but who According to him, he did not respect his commitment to give him back power (in 2020). But above all, he does not want to remain in history as the one who lost the power of the PDCI d'Houphouët ", estimates an observer.

"He is responsible for all the ills of this country", assures on condition of anonymity a specialist in communication. "It was he who introduced the ivoirité worm into the fruit. Now there is frequent intercommunal violence. He humiliated the soldiers by refusing to receive them. Now there are repeated mutinies. He is also the symbol of immobility ".

Lovers of cigars and good wines, HKB, whom many describe as "very close to his pennies", approached his former enemy Alassane Dramane Ouattara in 2005 to create the Rassemblement des houphouëtistes pour la democratie et la paix (RHDP ), electoral alliance between Ouattara's party and the PDCI.

Third in the 2010 presidential election behind Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara, Bédié keeps his commitment and actively supports the latter throughout the post-electoral crisis (2010-2011) which killed nearly 3,000 people in a few months.

After a honeymoon with the Head of State, whom he still supports in the 2015 presidential election (Ouattara even had the third bridge in Abidjan named Bédié), HKB again fell out with ADO in 2018, precisely because of the presidential election.

The Sphinx ensures that Mr. Ouattara was committed to supporting a PDCI candidate in 2020, in exchange for the support of his party in 2015.

"The promises only concern those who believe in them. ADO has rolled it in flour ", underlines a PDCI deputy, on condition of anonymity, who would have liked" to leave the place ".

However, an executive sees HKB as "a fine tactician who has weathered all storms" and has convinced "the young wolves" of the PDCI to support him again.
