Since when has the song become a subject of university studies?

Internationally, "popular musical studies" have been an object of study for a long time, but in France, where we like boxes, it took time for this transversal subject to find its place. This has been the case since the 2000s with the research collective "Les waves du monde" or the development of the journals "Volumes" and "Audimat".

Why take the song seriously?

The texts deal with all subjects of society, such as violence against women. From the Middle Ages songs evoke arranged marriages, women as objects of exchange in conflict. Barbara mentions incest in her song "Nantes" and Anne Sylvestre the Strauss-Kahn affair in "Juste une femme".

With the appearance of the record, the song has become a central object in people's lives. Since 1968 many academics have worked on deconstructing the hierarchy of the arts. The song is no longer a "minor art" although Gainsbourg had a lot of fun with it. The proof: the Nobel Prize for Literature awarded to Bob Dylan in 2016!
