End of dependence on Russia

The four astronauts, three Americans and one Japanese, taken into orbit by the Dragon capsule from private company SpaceX boarded the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday. The Resilience spacecraft docked on Tuesday, according to images broadcast live on the internet by Nasa, the US space agency, which hopes no longer will have to depend on Russian rockets to reach the ISS. The four astronauts then floated in zero gravity through the airlock to the station, where they were greeted by the three crew members.

The capsule was launched by a reusable Falcon 9 rocket from private firm SpaceX, NASA's new means of space transportation after nine years of dependence on Russia and the first craft to be qualified by NASA to transport human beings since the space shuttle, almost 40 years ago.

This first operational flight follows a successful demonstration mission, from May to August, during which two American astronauts were taken to the ISS then brought back to Earth safely by SpaceX, the first private company to accomplish this technological feat.

In total, SpaceX is to launch two other manned flights in 2021 for NASA, including one in the spring with European Thomas Pesquet, and four cargo refueling missions in the next 15 months.
