B.C. to require proof of COVID - 19 vaccination for non-essential services – Aug 23, 2021. In the interim, in areas where community transmission is increased significantly or where there are outbreaks, the requirements to be fully vaccinated may be required at the direction of the local medical health officer. Individuals will be able to save a copy to their phone to show it when entering or using designated businesses and events. People who cannot access their records online will be provided with a secure alternative option, officials said. 1:58 Industry welcomes vaccination card requirement.

Premier Jason Kenney, who has resisted calls for a vaccine passport program that would require proof of vaccination to enter non-essential businesses, said earlier this month the card as well as a digital QR code expected in the coming weeks are for when businesses make the choice to require proof of vaccination.

NDP Leader Rachel Notley suggested the government’s announcement was a “distraction” Tuesday, adding that any QR code should be paired with mandatory use of a vaccine passport in non-essential settings.

“What that will do is it will … support the businesses who need their customers to be confident in the safety of the setting in order for those businesses to offer their full range of services. … And, more importantly even, at this moment, it will ensure a reduction in transmission of the virus amongst unvaccinated people,” she said at a press conference.

During a Zoom meeting with doctors Monday, chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said it’s evident vaccine passport systems encourage people to get vaccinated.

In the two weeks following British Columbia’s announcement, the province saw an almost three per cent increase in vaccinations in those 30 to 39 years old and a four per cent increase in 19 to 29 year olds, she said.

“I think it’s pretty clear that requirements, especially for discretionary activities, can have an impact on those age groups where we most need right now to increase our uptake, because that’s where it’s the lowest,” she said.

“I would say that that’s been the experience in other jurisdictions.”

At a campaign stop in B.C. on Tuesday, federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau criticized Kenney’s response to COVID-19, claiming Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole thinks Alberta is the model to follow when dealing with the pandemic.

Tory candidate says she ‘misspoke’ in opposing vaccine passports — twice

Tory candidate says she ‘misspoke’ in opposing vaccine passports — twice 'We don't support vaccine passports, you know, to come into Canada or to leave Canada,' said the Conservative candidate, who is running for re-election. Conservative candidate Rosemarie Falk says she misspoke when she told an interviewer that her party does not support vaccine passports for entry into or departure from Canada -- despite making the assertion twice.

Israel’s government has expanded availability of controversial Covid - 19 vaccine booster shots to all inoculated residents 12 and older and decreed that those who decline the third jab will soon lose their “green pass” privileges. Those with proof of having received a booster shot also will have the privilege of dodging a week -long quarantine upon returning to Israel from overseas, as long as they traveled to a country deemed to have low or moderate risk of Covid - 19 infection. Booster recipients will be allowed to self-isolate for 24 hours or take a test to prove that they’re not infected with the virus.

“The approach in Alberta hasn’t worked for Albertans. It’s hurting the Alberta economy and hurting the people who did the right thing in Alberta and did get vaccinated, because they’re looking at more lockdowns, more restrictions,” Trudeau said.

“And people think that it’d be a good idea to have Erin O’Toole sitting across from Jason Kenney when it comes to finishing this pandemic. That’d be bad, not just for Albertans but for everyone in the country.”

The premier’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on both Hinshaw and Trudeau’s statements.

Some businesses, institutions and venues have decided to require proof of vaccination in the absence of a provincial passport system.

The City of Edmonton said Tuesday it isn’t looking at mandating vaccination to enter facilities, such as recreation centres, at this time.

However, at an unrelated news conference Tuesday morning, Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson said he believes it’s only a matter of time before the city implements a vaccine mandate for employees.

“In the absence of leadership from the Government of Alberta, we’re seeing more institutions having to make that call on their own,” he said.

COVID-19: Mandatory indoor masking for Saskatchewan public indoor spaces Sept. 17

COVID-19: Mandatory indoor masking for Saskatchewan public indoor spaces Sept. 17 Premier Scott Moe and Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer, Dr. Saqib Shahab, are expected to provide an update on the COVID-19 situation on Thursday. Ahead of the COVID-19 briefing on Thursday, he announced via Facebook that new measures are coming to the province to combat the fourth wave.

All city employees had to disclose their vaccination status as of last Friday in order to better inform next steps. No results have been released publicly, but in a statement to Postmedia city spokeswoman Catherine Kuehne said the response rate and overall vaccination status data will be publicly available within the next week.

Neighbouring Strathcona County Mayor Rod Frank said Tuesday that he will be seeking council’s support for county officials to begin the process of crafting a passport system for access to non-essential municipal services, such as recreation centres and other city facilities.
