Public Health Agency of Canada involved in 'error' on trucker vaccine rules: CP sources

Public Health Agency of Canada involved in 'error' on trucker vaccine rules: CP sources Turmoil and confusion over whether truckers would remain exempt from the vaccine mandate last week stemmed from bureaucrats misinterpreting policy in more than one federal agency — including the one that co-ordinates Canada's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The trucking industry was caught by surprise on Jan. 12 when the Canada Border Services Agency sent a statement to media saying that unvaccinated and partially vaccinated truck drivers crossing into Canada from the United States would remain exempt from the vaccine mandate which was expected to come into force last weekend.

The Truckers Freedom Convoy to Ottawa is passing through Montreal on Friday. Two groups of truckers and supporters opposed to COVID-19 lockdowns, vaccine mandates and restrictions left from Vancouver and Prince George on Sunday, meeting in Calgary, and are scheduled to arrive in Ottawa on Saturday.

Another group travelling the “east route” will depart from Rivière-du-Loup on Friday at 7 a.m., heading along Highway 20; arriving in Quebec City at 9:30 a.m., St-Liboire at 12:30 p.m., then through Montreal via Highways 25 and 40, stopping briefly to rendez-vous with the Eastern Townships convoy, and continuing on to Vankleek Hill, Ont., arriving at 3 p.m.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said the Truckers Freedom Convoy represents a “fringe minority” whose “unacceptable views” don’t represent the way most Canadians feel.

People are 'fed up': Quebec follows Ontario's lead and loosens COVID-19 restrictions The Quebec government announced the loosening of some COVID-19 restrictions Tuesday, following the lead of Ontario and other provinces amid indications the Omicron surge may be peaking in some areas. Quebec Premier François Legault said the province would adopt a go-slow approach, which will see gathering limits raised on Monday for private functions, as well as the reopening of restaurants at 50 per cent capacity and a resumption of some sports activities for those under 18. Other restrictions will be eased for religious, entertainment and sports venues on Feb. 7. "We are all aware that a lot of Quebecers are fed up, they're fed up with the restrictions.

Cuthand: Freedom Convoy diminishing the word 'freedom' .
A protest by a group of truckers who want an end to vaccination regulations at border crossings has morphed into a right-wing band of angry people wanting their “freedom.” This so-called freedom convoy is headed to Ottawa and individuals and groups with an ax to grind with Ottawa, the Liberals or Justin Trudeau have joined it in an effort to bring the country to its knees. The original issue of a proof of vaccine requirement in order to cross the international border is full of misinformation and neglected facts. The vaccine mandate exists on both sides of the border.
