Sabryna Mongeon’s car skidded off a snowy road the night of Dec. 24 and hit a Hydro-Québec utility pole. She was safe in the car. Then she stepped outside.

The 18-year-old woman had just wished her mother Merry Christmas in Pontiac and was planning to join friends in Gatineau for a night of celebration. She had travelled along the smaller roads because of poor weather conditions. She never made it to her party.

After smashing into the pole, Mongeon was afraid the car would catch fire. She didn’t know that the crash toppled live wires on her car.

She took a massive electrical charge — 14,500 volts — through her hands and feet and lay semi-conscious for hours in the snow before someone found her.

“Doctors and nurses are calling her a ‘Christmas miracle’ because she survived,” her sister Samantha Mongeon told the Montreal Gazette.

Mongeon explained that her sister lay in pile of snow until a passerby found her about 6 a.m., suffering from severe burns and frostbite.

The man called an ambulance and stayed by her side, “warming her in his arms until help came,” she said.

Sabryna Mongeon was taken to a hospital in Hull. She was medically stabilized before being transferred to the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal.

Montreal doctors put her in a coma for a few days and woke her up to ask her about her wish to live. The electric shock damaged her extremities. Both arms and legs needed to be amputated. The family wanted Sabryna Mongeon to make her own decision about the next step.

“She told them that she didn’t lay freezing in the snow for hours only to die now,” Samantha Mongeon said.

Surgery took place Monday, she said.

Samantha Mongeon said her younger sister, who is godmother to her four-month-old son Lucas, is a strong and independent woman. Before the accident, she had her own apartment and was working in a restaurant as a waitress. Sabryna’s a role model, her sister added.

Samantha Mongeon said doctors were optimistic. The patient is being kept in an induced coma to help her recover from the trauma, and so far, all vital signs are good.

Before being plunged into a coma again, the sisters spoke about the future. “She was talking about going back to school to study. She wants to work with the disabled,” Samantha Mongeon said.

The family knows who came to Sabryna Mongeon’s aid early Christmas morning. But the man was traumatized by the serious accident and does not wish to be named, Samantha Mongeon said.

A crowdfunding campaign Samantha Mongeon started earlier this week has already amassed more than $26,000. The fund was initially started to help defray lodging costs in Montreal for the Mongeons’ mother, Sophie Robertson, of Outaouais, who plans to stay by Sabryna’s side while she recovers, a process expected to take several months.

“My mother is devastated,” Samantha Mongeon said.

But as donations continue to pour in, Samantha Mongeon said she is grateful that her sister will be able to have all the help she needs.

On Wednesday, her she posted on Facebook: “Quebec heard me stammer for you my sister … I love you.”
