Amazon reportedly wants Alexa to be a real-time, universal translator

Amazon reportedly wants Alexa to be a real-time, universal translator We've been dreaming of universal translators throughout the history of science fiction; Star Trek has only popularized the concept. Alexa already can translate words and short phrases from and into a variety of languages, but Yahoo's sources say that Amazon is pushing for a true multilingual assistant that can perform more complex translations. Such a system would need to be aware of cultural as well as linguistic details, as well, as most language is dependent on contextual and situational cues.

“She was a very vibrant trans woman that had a life ahead of her,” Forrester recalled. “She had goals and dreams just like everyone else.”

The GoFundMe initially was raising money to cremate Wells, but Forrester said the City of Toronto would cover the expense.

Burials cost just over $3,000, said Anna Fiorino, spokesperson for Toronto Employment and Social Services. That expense includes funeral home services like preparing the remains and the casket, as well as the cemetery plot opening and closing.

“Toronto Employment and Social Services provided 222 funerals” in 2016, Fiorino said.

A public memorial was held for Wells in December.
