The NDP’s plan to fight rural crime will focus on arresting prolific offenders and adding dozens of new RCMP officers, staff, and Crown prosecutors, Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley said Friday.

The price tag comes in at $10 million, with $8 million earmarked to hire 39 new RCMP officers and 40 new staff.

The remaining $2 million will be for hiring up to 10 Crown prosecutors who will focus solely on rural crime.

“Rural Crime Reduction Units are designed to act fast to target repeat offenders who commit the vast majority of crimes in an area,” said RCMP deputy commissioner Todd Shean, in a news release. “I can assure you, if you are committing crime in Alberta, we will identify you and we will stop you.”

As part of the initiative, specially trained officers will focus on prolific offenders, including six intelligence-focused officers. Four crime analysts will assist the RCMP in identifying repeat offenders and targeting organized crime.

“Rural police officers are part of their communities,” Ganley said, in a news release. “They do difficult and extremely important work every day. I want to thank the RCMP for the work they do to protect Albertans. I’m confident this plan will give our rural police officers more tools in their toolbox to fight crime.”

Alberta RCMP deputy commissioner Todd Shean was slated to appear with Ganley.

The announcement comes a day after the NDP government’s throne speech highlighted rural crime as a priority issue.

“The focus will be to act on the advice of our police and law enforcement experts, including specific measures to better address the challenges of policing in rural communities and new measures to make sure people who refuse to obey the law are held to account,” said the speech, read by Lt.-Gov. Lois Mitchell.

“This includes investing in new bait-and-tracking technology, including technology related to farm equipment, new measures to help police spend less time on paperwork and more time on the street, and putting boots on the ground where they’re needed most to protect families.”

The United Conservative Party pushed for an emergency debate on the issue last fall, saying crime rates in some rural Alberta communities have jumped by more than 250 per cent since 2011.
