A 26-year-old man who has lived in Australia since emigrating from Canada at the age of two is begging not to be deported back to a homeland he knows nothing about.

Colin Martin, who lives in Melbourne, has an intellectual disability and a lengthy history of legal trouble, issued a plea for mercy through the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

“I’m scared because I don’t know anything,” Martin told the broadcaster from a detention facility. “You know it’s another country — I’ve grown up in Australia — I’m Aussie. I’ve grown up here, I’ve done all my school here.”

Martin moved to Australia with his Canadian father and Australian mother in 1994. He has not returned to Canada since.

He had come to Canada as a baby , had never lived anywhere else than Canada Inevitably a Dutch criminal is sent to Australia . At the end of the day all the countries are worse off for it being they're stuck dealing with criminals that are harder to rehabilitate because they're in an unfamiliar enviroment.

It ' s fucked but Australia doesn't give a shit, the guy in the OP will 100% be deported . It ' s unfortunate he has a disability, but so does the guy working at KFC down the road who somehow I can’t agree with it being the failure of the society that he is a criminal. I ’ m mentally ill and spent most

His connections here remain thin but he did excel at hockey at the age of 11, according to a media profile in Australia last year. His father, Neil Martin, keeps his son’s hockey medal and ribbons, although the boy grew up mostly with his Australian mother after a marital breakdown. (The father is seen wearing a Tragically Hip T-shirt in media photos.)

Martin had difficulty in school and, at the age of 14, was diagnosed with an intellectual disability. He started misbehaving and taking drugs. He has had a significant number of run-ins with police since.

After an arrest last summer, Martin was held in immigration detention instead of being released on bail. He was held as a non-citizen of Australia involved in crime. He was deemed to be of “bad character” by Australia’s Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

Canadian Bianca Farella scored the go-ahead try with just over a minute remaining to give Canada a 26-21 lead, but the Americans scored in the dying seconds of the game to move back ahead for victory.

How do you get taken to another country as a child and just never become a citizen? I can't imagine being whisked away to another hemisphere because I moved to a country when I was a toddler. People who are non permanent residents of Australia pay a slightly higher income tax to cover public

it ' s a parent's job to make sure their kid has all the papers in order after immigrating. a kid is not going to know that shit. my parents kept my "pink paper" when I got naturalized in Canada and only gave me the paper recently because it was highly valuable for my Old Age Pension when I turn 65.

The family sought an alternative and appealed the deportation order.

Evidence at a recent Administrative Appeals Tribunal hearing showed Martin has more than 150 charges on his record — from graffiti and driving infractions to taking part in an armed robbery of a sub shop in 2011, ABC reported.

“I didn’t know in doing these offences that I’d be thrown out of the country away from my friends and family,” Martin told the hearing.

He lost his appeal, ending his hope of a special visa to stay in Australia. The board ruled that Martin “constitutes an unacceptable risk to the Australian community.” He was given a removal date of May 29.

The immigration department didn’t comment specifically about Martin’s case but said in a statement: “Non-citizens, who engage in criminal activity or other serious conduct of concern, regardless of their age or nationality, should generally expect to forfeit the privilege of staying in Australia.”

As a Canadian citizen that is an immigrant that came from another country .. if I was in charge He’s an Aussie . One with a mental disability and for whom the system has obviously failed. Frankly, it ' s Australia 's responsibility to either rehabilitate or imprison this guy. And the law should not be written

There has been a crackdown on non-citizens in Australia deemed to be of bad character following changes to the country’s Migration Act in December 2014.

The number of visa cancellations has increased dramatically, with a record high last year of 1,284, according to government statistics. There were 84 in the year preceding the legislative amendment.

There are not many Canadians on the list of last year’s cancellations.

Most are from neighbouring New Zealand (620), followed by Britain (124) and Vietnam (55).

“Entering or remaining in Australia is a privilege, and it is expected that non-citizens are, and have been, law-abiding,” said a statement from Australia’s Home Office.
