A 33-year-old Beaverton, Ont., mother is facing charges after allegedly filming videos of her toddler sitting in her lap and steering her vehicle on a highway.

Durham Regional Police were notified on May 31 of the existence of several incriminating videos posted on social media.

They showed a woman driving a vehicle down the highway “at a high rate of speed,” police said, on several different occasions, with one notable detail: her three-year-old daughter was sat in her lap, steering the vehicle for her, with no visible seat belts on either of them.

The mother filmed the videos with her cellphone, police say.

Police have notified Children’s Aid Society of the incident.

The woman is facing nine charges, including careless driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, and failing to provide the necessities of life. She was released after her arrest with a promise to appear in court.

Police are not releasing the identity of the mother in order to protect the child.
