A woman has been charged.The OSPCA executed a warrant on a home in Colborne (about 24 kilometres east of Cobourg) on March 21 after receiving concerns about the health of a large number of dogs on the property.

A man charged in the death an infant in Oshawa fought back tears as he made an appearance in bail court Friday.

Denim Henderson, 25, was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court via video next Friday. He is charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm in the death of eight-month-old Kaleb McKay.

During his brief appearance Henderson spoke only to confirm his name. He stood, hands in cuffs and his face contorted as he wept during his appearance.

Five prisoners have been charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder in a deadly riot at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert.The Dec. 14, 2016, riot in the medium security unit, involving roughly 185 prisoners, left one inmate dead and eight injured.Six of those inmates suffered non-life threatening injuries after being hit by shotgun pellets as guards fired their guns in an effort to bring the situation under control.

Jordan Brownell, 26, Kaleb’s mother, is charged with manslaughter. She is scheduled to appear in bail court in Oshawa Friday afternoon.

The suspects were charged following an investigation to Kaleb’s death in late 2016.

On Dec. 29, 2016, officers responded to an apartment on Robson St. in Oshawa for an unknown trouble call. Police found the boy, Kaleb, who wasn’t breathing. Paramedics tried but couldn’t revive the child.

A post mortem was conducted and the death was ruled a homicide. The victim died of numerous injuries.

Police said in a media release Friday that the charges were laid following a “lengthy investigation” but did not provide further details. A source with knowledge of the case said the investigation included wiretap surveillance on persons on interest.

Kaleb’s death has now been deemed the sixth homicide in Durham Region in 2016.
