A Fredericton cat rescue organization is trying to find homes for a colony of 40 cats.

The Fredericton chapter of Cat Rescue Maritimes received a call from a couple living in a rural community outside of Fredericton after the woman saw a truck "dump" 20 cats at the end of their road.

"About five of the cats were pregnant and almost immediately started giving birth," said Gabrielle Hough, chair and primary lead of the Fredericton chapter of CARMA. "Some of them were in labour right at the time when this dump was done."

Wobbly rescue kittens with rare brain disorder seek new homes

Wobbly rescue kittens with rare brain disorder seek new homes A trio of wobbly Edmonton rescue kittens are ready to start their new lives, preferably in homes with a little extra padding. Twist, Flip and Flop stumble and stagger like they've been at sea too long. The Alberta littermates have cerebellar hypoplasia, a neurological condition in which the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls fine motor skills and coordination, is underdeveloped at birth. Cats with CH are sometimes affectionately described as wobbly cats. While Flop has been adopted, his unstable siblings are still waiting to find new homes.

She said the couple already had 20 cats living in and around their home, and they don't have the resources to feed the new ones.

"This was overwhelming. This is an older couple, they don't have a lot of themselves," she said.

After the couple reached out to the rescue organization last Thursday, someone from CARMA visited the location, which Hough said she can't disclose for fear of breaching privacy.

"[She] said this is a crisis, like she said there's kittens, there's pregnant moms, there's moms with nursing babies, there's older cats, everything you can imagine is there," Hough said.

Next steps

Hough said when CARMA is contacted by people about large colonies, their first priority is to get food out to the location, which they have done.

Johnny who? Ticats QB Masoli earns top performer nod for second straight week

Johnny who? Ticats QB Masoli earns top performer nod for second straight week Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is a CFL top performer for the second week in a row. Masoli finished second in voting for Week 3 on Tuesday, after guiding the Ticats to a win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last week. Masoli threw for 369 yards and a touchdown in the win. He leads the league in passing after three weeks. Edmonton Eskimos running back CJ Gable, a former Ticat, was voted top performer of the week. He ran for a CFL season-high 105 yards and a touchdown in the Eskimos' come-from-behind win over the B.C. Lions.

"Our trapper pulled up on Friday with a carload of food and just started tearing the bags open and the cats were just diving in and gorging themselves because they're starving," she said.

Then they put out a call to the public, asking for donations of dry food, litter and money, and volunteers who are willing to foster some cats.

She said CARMA has a lot of people willing to foster, but most of them already have all the cats they can handle.

Kathryn Downe has been fostering five cats through CARMA, and she said while she doesn't have space for any of the cats from this particular colony she has fostered cats from different colonies for years.

"Fostering is a really rewarding activity," she said.

She said because they grow up with other cats, they get along with them more easily.

"They're very special cats, they're quite unusual compared to other cats," she said.

Community outreach

Hough said the response from the community has been "tremendous."

She said since Saturday morning, when they put out the call out, they received 13 applications from people wanting to foster cats. The animals in most urgent need of foster care are two female cats who have seven or eight kittens between them.

"We can't break them up because we don't know who is whose," she said.

She said the SPCA will likely take some cats to their shelter, and a local vet has already offered to help. While this is a large colony, it is not the largest CARMA has worked to rehome, said Hough.

On Monday she said they will assess the cats, make sure none need immediate attention, then they'll move on to spay and neuter them. Most will likely stay at the colony for some time until the organization can find adopters and people to foster them.

Some cats may be left to live out their lives in the area if they're too wild, Hough said.
