Taylor Swift has cancelled her scheduled performance at this year’s Melbourne Cup, with racing organisers blaming a scheduling issue. But the booking was strongly criticised by animal rights groups, who called on Swift to boycott the racing event at which six horses have died since 2013.

Taylor Smith has elated animal rights activists while disappointing Australian fans after it was announced that she's cancelling a concert in conjunction with the Melbourne Cup horse racing event.

As CNN reports, Swift was scheduled to perform at the Victoria Racing Club on November 5 as part of her world tour in support her latest album, Lover.

However, a statement released by the concert's promoter is announcing that Swift won't be performing as planned, due to a "recent change" in her itinerary.

Victoria Racing Club CEO Neil Wilson added: “The VRC has learned that Taylor Swift is now unable to make the trip to Australia and therefore cannot be with us on Melbourne Cup Day. Obviously, this is disappointing for everyone. We understand how important the pre-Cup entertainment is and we look forward to providing an update shortly.”

While not mentioned in the announcement, Swift's cancellation comes on the heels of backlash from Australian animal rights groups, citing allegations of horses being mistreated while exerting pressure on the 29-year-old singer by launching a petition urging her to say #NupToTheCup.

Following news of the concert's cancellation, the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses took to Facebook to issue a statement lauding Swift's decision.
