After it was revealed that Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough will not be returning as judges on America's Got Talent, new allegations of a "toxic culture" behind the scenes of the show have emerged.

According to a report by Variety, Union and Hough were shooting an interstitial segment with guest judge Jay Leno back in April, on the production lot, when the former late night talk show host allegedly made a racially insensitive joke.

The alleged joke reportedly made some of the staff and crew uncomfortable or offended, and Union urged producers of the show to report the incident to Human Resources. She reportedly had the conversation with an NBC exec, but the incident was never brought to HR, according to Variety.

Actress Gabrielle Union was reportedly fired from America ' s Got Talent for speaking out about racism and sexism. When news broke on Friday that Gabrielle Union wouldn’t be returning to her chair on America ’ s Got Talent next season, it came as a shock to fans.

NBC and Freemantle, the production company behind AGT, responded to the reports and allegations, telling ET in a statement, "America’s Got Talent has a long history of inclusivity and diversity in both our talent and the acts championed by the show.

"The judging and host line-up has been regularly refreshed over the years and that is one of the reasons for AGT’s enduring popularity," the statement continued. "NBC and the producers take any issues on set seriously."

The Leno incident reportedly involved the comedian making an off-the-cuff remark about a portrait of series creator and judge Simon Cowell standing with his dogs. Leno allegedly joked that the dogs looked like they would be "on the menu at a Korean restaurant."

The line, which Leno allegedly delivered to cameras as part of the unscripted segment, was cut before the segment was aired.

Multiple sources spoke to Variety about alleged incidents that occurred in which Union raised concerns with producers, only for those concerns to reportedly remain unaddressed. Another incident involved a contestant, a white male, whose talent was quick-changing between costumes.

At one point, his act reportedly involved him wearing dark make-up for a bit in which he dressed like Beyonce. Variety reports Union objected to the act being involved in the show, and while it was cut before the audition rounds aired, the contestant was allegedly still allowed to try out.

This was Hough and Union's first season as judges on the series, after stepping in for former judges Mel B and Heidi Klum. Judges Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel, as well as host Terry Crews, are expected to return next season.
