Robert Taylor, 27, kicked off the episode with a beautiful falsetto rendition of “Bruises” by Lewis Capaldi. Taylor, who grew up in a religious household, was alienated by most of his family when he came out as gay. His father was the only one who supported him and encouraged Taylor to audition on the show before he died.

“Never, ever, ever be scared to do that. Amazing,” judge Katy Perry said.

The episode reunited host Ryan Seacrest with a singer he hadn’t seen in more than 15 years. Grace Leer, 27, was a contestant on “American Juniors,” Fox's failed kid version of “Idol,” when she was 11. Seeing Seacrest again, Leer was shocked by how little the host had changed.

Leer sang “Crowded Table” by The Highwomen, stretching her notes out in a way that was reminiscent of an opera singer.

Perry thought her country yodel would fit better with a slower, sadder song and had Leer perform “Crazy” by Patsy Cline. “Obviously, it’s the secret sauce of your voice. It’s instant identity. It’s undeniably you,” she said.

The judges left the audition room to roast giant marshmallows by the fireside. That's when Nash, 18, who goes by a single name, approached the judges (almost getting taken out by security in the process) for his chance to perform. Dubbed “mullet man” by Luke Bryan, Nash performed “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” by Toby Keith.

Bryan supported the young singer, singing the chorus in a duet, but it was ultimately a no from the judges, who said his voice needed refinement.

Seeking fresh air and sunshine, the judges boarded a boat on the Potomac River to host more auditions. Megan Knight, 21, performed “When Your Mind’s Made Up” by Glen Hansard, allowing the notes to stretch into almost a whine. The judges said she used too much bravado but gave her a ticket to Hollywood before they re-created the “King of the World” scene from “Titanic.”

While they were gone, Gilberto Rivera, 23, found himself in an empty room, wondering where the judges went. Returning first, Bryan allowed Rivera to sit behind the judges' table, and later Rivera led judge Lionel Richie in a mock audition before turning it into a duet as he took over from Richie singing the lyrics to “Hello.” The singer’s voice shook Richie, who looked on in disbelief.

For his audition, Rivera carried the same power with “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner, but his look – long hair with a rainbow tank top and red high heels – made the judges feel he was better suited for theater. Rivera promised that he would change his look (and wax his chest) and become more serious if given the chance to continue.

Several singers followed their dreams to Hollywood, including Jahzan, 18; Aliana Jester, 18; Demi Rae, 26; and music teacher Franklin Boone, 27.

Jahzan emigrated from Jamaica to New York with her mother and had been living in her uncle’s salon. Jahzan sang “Warrior,” by Demi Lovato.

Jester brought along her emotional support dog for her unique performance of “Who’s Loving You” by the Jackson Five. She sang each note in a long, almost continuous take. Rae had wanted to audition since she was 9, writing it in a future goals book, but never pursued it because she didn’t see singers that looked like her. She sang "Mad at You" by Noah Cyrus and  found comfort with the judges to be herself.

Boone carried the collective dreams of his students, singing “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac. Boone’s voice was raw and gritty, matching the tone of the song while making it his own.

Roselyn Carter, of the Watts area of Los Angeles, carried the hopes of an entire neighborhood on her back. In an area known for gang violence, Carter wanted to show others that there was something more to life.

“That’s what you call natural talent. It’s your interpretation that just knocks me out,” Richie said. “I can not tell you how moving each one of those deliveries are.”
