On Sunday’s “American Idol,” the judges threw the remaining contestants a curveball in the second round of Hollywood Week. Rather than forming into groups as they had in the past seasons, they would team up for duets.

“ American Idol ” finalizes the Top 14 on Monday, April 8. We’ll see the remaining 10 contestants from the Top 20 sing duets with well-known musical 8:00 p.m. – The second half of the Top 14 finalists will be revealed tonight as the contestants each sing a celebrity duet before seven of them move

The first partnership was between Louis Knight and Francisco Martin, potential rivals turned friends. Calling themselves 3:15, they decided to sing “Breakeven” by The Script, but Martin’s nerves got the best of him onstage and he forgot the lyrics. Knight attempted to help his partner by covering for him.

“If you make a mistake, if you forget the words, that’s OK,” judge Katy Perry told Martin. “We do it all the time. Just don’t give up and don’t show defeat. Don’t let the audience know.”

Despite the flub, the judges saw promise in the two and pushed them through to the next round. “Breakeven” also provided success for Landen Starkman & Perrin York, who dubbed themselves Nervous. The two had great chemistry  and even better voices, and the judges had no problem advancing the two.

Duets saw the formation of potential lifelong friendships. Soul and blues singers Jovin Webb and Faith Bechnel bonded over being from Louisiana. Calling themselves Soul ’D Out, they brought a raspy world weariness to “It’s a Man’s Man's Man's World” by James Brown, which earned them both spots in the next round.

Also going to the next round were Makayla Phillips and Cyniah Elise. Calling themselves Diva Show, they brought a little bit of church to the "Idol" stage with a rendition of “The Prayer” by Céline Dion and Andrea Bocelli. The pair had a rocky rehearsal, with Elise’s mother trying to teach Phillips how to harmonize and Elise briefly considering another partner. But onstage, their voices complimented each other well.

Dubbed Ebony and Ivory, Genavieve Linkowski and Travis Finlay also sang “The Prayer.” Singing in duets was an emotional experience for Linkowski, whose sister Corrin died last year in a car wreck. Her sister had been her singing partner, and Linkowski stopped doing duets after her death. But onstage, Linkowski and Finlay worked well together, pleasing the judges, and taking another step closer to their dreams.

'American Idol' goes to Hollywood Week: See who made the cut

'American Idol' goes to Hollywood Week: See who made the cut ABC'S "American Idol" went to Hollywood in Monday's episode, as the judges whittled the field of contestants. Who survived? For this week’s challenge, the contestants separated themselves into the music genres that best represented them and competed against their peers for the chance to preserve their spots on the show.

During a Friday morning segment on “Fox & Friends,” Fox News host Pete Hegseth told Geraldo Rivera that it would be perfectly fine for him to utilize the president’s “go back to where you came from” ' American Idol ' recap : Two is not always company during Hollywood Week duet competition .

Not all friendships ended happily ever after, though. Dubbed Soul Libre, roommates Robert Taylor and Tito Rey were forced to say goodbye after a bizarre rendition of “Say So” by PJ Morton and Jojo left only Taylor in the competition.

Partners Peyton Aldridge and Madison Paige got off to a bad start when Aldridge skipped rehearsals to buy chicken wings from a gas station, forcing Paige to track him down. Dubbed The Chicken Wings, they sang “Don’t You Wanna Stay” by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, but Aldridge went off-script with his guitar playing, causing Paige to mess up her opening.

“I want to apologize to you. You worked hard … I’ve been rehearsing all day and just got in the moment and lost control,” Aldridge said. Appealing to the judges, he added, “I want to apologize to you and I want to apologize to my family. I think y’all should give her another chance because it wasn’t right and she should get another chance.”

Aldridge’s plea worked, and the judges decided to give the two another shot in the next round.

Less successful were Zack Dobbins and Courtney Timmons, dubbed the Strange Ones, who were plagued by procrastination and indecision when it came to selecting a song. Starting with “Higher Love” by Whitney Houston and Kygo, they switched to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye before switching at the last minute to “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande.

In this week 's edition of Tuesday Morning Quarterback, CBS News special correspondent James Brown joined CBSN to talk about Kobe Bryant's legacy and look ahead to ' American Idol ' recap : Two is not always company during Hollywood Week duet competition . USA TODAY Entertainment.

What followed was a painful-to-watch performance in which Dobbins didn’t know any of the lyrics, and Timmons took over, turning it into a solo performance. Neither made it to the next round.

“When you walk out onstage you fake it; and if you have a partner with you, you never leave your partner alone,” judge Lionel Richie said. “You came on that stage together, you will walk off that stage together.”

The duet round broke up the musical partnership and real-life couple of Kat and Alex when the judges decided to move only Kat Lopez to the next round. They didn’t think her boyfriend, Alex Garrido’s, performance in “You Say” by Lauren Daigle was strong enough.

“I’m doing it for both of us,” Lopez promised him through tears.

The other “Idol” couple, Jonny West and Margie Mays, who performed as Marjonny Ways, barely made it to the next round. Their performance of “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” by Meghan Trainor wasn’t their best, but they had enough goodwill from past performances to carry them through.

“One thing I have noticed that is really helpful is giving each other a little space,” Perry advised. “In this competition, it’s great to have understanding and partnership and to be teammates and support each other, but this time is about fulfilling your personal dreams.”

American Idol recap: 'Idol' fills out its Top 20, but there's a catch

American Idol recap: 'Idol' fills out its Top 20, but there's a catch That's not exactly a Final Judgment, now is it? Not that one single person is surprised, but we kick off American Idol Season 18’s Final Judgment Part 2 (it just sounds so dramatic, doesn’t it?) by learning that Dillon James has, in fact, claimed a spot in our Top 20. Of course he has! Dillon James has a great voice, is extremely likable, and can legitimately rock a cowboy hat — if this kid doesn’t sail right on into the Top 10, I will be extremely surprised.

Also performing “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” to great success were Aliana Jester and  Yzthasinger, calling themselves Match. The two had great chemistry and both made it through to the next round.

Finally, Just Sam and Sheniel Maison, who dubbed themselves Short Fuze, ended the episode with a rendition of “Mercy” by Shawn Mendes. Sam dealt with great anxiety and nerves prior to the show, crying in the bathroom and vomiting before going on, but onstage, she was a picture of confidence, dancing around and feeling the music. Both delivered powerful performances to secure their places in the next round.

“You’re giving us drama,” Richie said. “To sing the song is one thing. To act the song and give us what you’re actually feeling is another.”

The final night of Hollywood Week on "American Idol" is Monday, 8 EDT/PDT, when singers face a solo round.
