In Gabon, the Ministry of Health has launched an operation to collect the wandering mental patients present in Libreville. In one week, 56 patients were recovered and transferred to the Melen mental health center located on the outskirts of the capital. The arrival of the new patients has exploded the workforce of the center, which has grown from 32 to 88 patients to care for, feed and house.

In the modest kitchen of the center, five women put the pots away after the meal of the day. The amount of food to be prepared has increased significantly. "The bag of rice is now two days, breakfast and evening meal," says Augé Mvono, head of catering.

The establishment has a subsidy from the State but it is derisory to cope with the explosion of charges. “We don't have enough resources. We are also launching an SOS in the law of associations, churches, NGOs to help us. Clothing, food and medicines are very important to us, ”explains Thierry Bayito Mokoko, director of the center.

The collection of wandering mental patients has been suspended pending an increase in reception capacities. The Minister of Health, Guy Patrick Obiang Ndong is determined to take care of all these patients. “It is not a communication operation. All must be taken care of whatever their pathological state and wherever they are ”.

The challenge is important because the only mental health center in the country is in the capital.
