An idea catching fire today revolves around the theme of "just get it running," which saved this 1968 Road Runner that had been parked in a farmer's field for decades "close to Caddo Millsin East Texas," according to its rescuer, Jerry Coleman.

Getting a car up on its feet avoids "paint jail," a term for cars that get caught in a failed restoration. Installing a modern drivetrain instead of using the OE parts would wipe out the original factory formula and drive up the price. These ideas were on Coleman's mind when he found this roller on Craigslist for $1,500. He bought it sight-unseen with a plan not to restore it. Instead, he traded labor at his heating and air conditioning business to Craig Borden, an enthusiast he met on Power Tour, to get the car running.

The 383 was stripped and the block and heads were painted Emerald Blue, not traditional Orange. Borden installed new gaskets, and rounded up missing parts including a timing chain, water pump, radiator, starter, brackets, and a distributor that he fudged a little with an electronic unit.

"No major surgery, and same with the transmission," says Borden. "It was all together but didn't have the shifter, so I found an original Competition Plus factory Hurst and adjusted the linkage."

The factory rearend came with an open differential with a set of 3.25s. Coleman found a stock Sure-Grip that Borden pulled apart to check bearings, and swapped the steep 4.56:1 gears for a set of 3.91s for cruising on the Power Tour.

According to Borden, the car looks "rough," the worst being quarter panels. The floors are "good." There is one rust spot in the roof. The construction is unit-body, which has rails that proved solid, despite the time in the East Texas field. Since fixing one panel would domino into replacing every panel, they were left alone.

The result is a fun driver that can be restored later as time and budgets permit, sold to another enthusiast to pick up the build, or just driven forever. Just get it running sure beats rusting away in a farmer's field.
